BUT FOR NOW… #TalkTalk #ThePartysOver #vinyl
I like very record, every song from TalkTalk and #MarkHollis. Big Fan.
Talk Talk were an English band formed in 1981, led by Mark Hollis (vocals, guitar, piano), Lee Harris (drums), and Paul Webb (bass). Initially a synth-pop group, Talk Talk's first two albums, The Party's Over (1982) and It's My Life (1984), reached top 40 in the UK and produced the international hit singles "Talk Talk", "Today", "It's My Life", and "Such a Shame". They achieved widespread critical success in Europe and the UK with the album The Colour of Spring (1986) along with its singles "Life's What You Make It" and "Living in Another World". 1988's Spirit of Eden moved the group towards a more experimental sound informed by jazz and improvisation, pioneering what became known as post-rock; it was critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful.

The Party is over. Mark Hollis also Died too soon, Talk Talk were more than only Such a shame. They have extremely good albums. The last of his years he were completely apart from society.

The prompt is Colour

Talk Talk, “The Colour of Spring” 1985

Oh man - where to begin? #MarkHollis’ feathery vocals, synths and guitars sprinkled throughout, gentle melodies anchored with aching rhythms that made them stealth-catchy, slipping into the listener’s subconscious.

For years I regarded this album as one that would work for any mix of folks - a musical skeleton key. But this is not bland, least-common denominator stuff; the effect here is evoked by this music having elements of different styles but none that overwhelm the whole - rhythmic but gentle, celebratory but controlled, pretty but not saccharine, synth driven but organic - glints of shiny metallic or crystal bits against a deep organic ground.

This album finds the #TalkTalk transitioning from upstart #synthpop purveyors towards something approaching symphonic. Hollis would continue down this road in subsequent efforts, towards intricate #ambient.

Talk Talk - The Color of Spring

Talk Talk pivoted hard into “real” instruments here, with a really great set of songs, a couple of key session players (Steve Winwood, Robbie McIntosh, David Rhodes), and an open, lovely production style.

Probably their most approachable album, with their hit “Life’s What You Make It”, which was pretty ubiquitous for a while…

"It's My Life" is a song by the English #newWave band #TalkTalk. Written by #MarkHollis and #TimFrieseGreene, it was the title track on the band's second album, #ItsMyLife (1984), and released as its first single in January 1984. It reached number 46 on the #UKSinglesChart, but did better in several other countries, reaching number 33 in #Germany, number 32 in #NewZealand, number 25 in #France and number 9 in #Italy. In North America.

#NowPlaying: #TalkTalk - Spirit of Eden
European #CD reissue.

One of two Talk Talk albums to turn your lights off for was released #OTD in 1988. Side A of this album, i.e. track 1 to 3, is one of the best pieces of music ever composed. The songs segue into each other. The Rainbow might be my favourite track. It's desolate, murky, and vast, and the two piano chords that play on the especially silent bits always strike me as odd and captivating.
