Variation of tooth traits in ecologically specialized and sympatric morphs

2024-12-21 | Preprint biorxiv

DOI: 10.1101/2024.12.18.629189

Guđbjörg Ósk Jónsdóttir et al

We examined variation in dental traits in four sympatric morphs of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) which differ in feeding specialisations, head and jaw bone morphology.

Why Do #Whales Go Through #Menopause?
New study argues that the change brought these #females an #evolutionary advantage — and perhaps did the same for #humans. Loking at the biology of the five #whale species, researchers argue menopause gave animals an evolutionary advantage. For example, it could have prevented older females from being pregnant at same time as their daughters, avoiding resource conflicts that would hurt both of their offspring. nytimes.com/2024/03/13/science

Scientists have long known that the miniature feather-tailed #possums in Australia and the island of New Guinea – members of the #marsupial family Acrobatidae – were #evolutionary cousins, but where they started their long evolutionary journey has been a bit of a mystery – until now.

Lichens are in an #evolutionary race against #climate change.

The symbiotic organisms could need more than a million years to adapt to just 1 degree Celsius of warming.

Scientists have long known that #lichens grow at a staggeringly slow rate. Some are thousands of years old and grow just millimeters each year. Now, new research suggests lichens are struggling to keep up with the changing climate.

..., self-preservation certainly is a defendable concept in the #evolutionary process, so I'd like to propose an alternative
6th #LawOfRobotics (s/:for which I might be hunted down by the presumed #superintelligence some day, #Terminator style./s):

"An artificial intelligence, even if it is biological, must always have an #autodestruct mechanism which it cannot deactivate."

In other words, humanity must always be able to "pull the plug"....

Bruce Lieberman, professor of #ecology & #evolutionary biology and senior curator of invertebrate paleontology at the KU Biodiversity Institute & Natural #History #Museum, sought to use steam-engine history to test the merits of “competitive exclusion,” a long-held idea in paleontology that #species can drive other species to #extinction through competition.
