The inscription reads, "Auxanos (made)(this grave) in memory of his father Tryphon and mother Auxanousa, when she was still living. Christians."
A reimagining of an early 3rd century AD altar to the holy goddess Minerva. It was found at High Rochester (Bremenium) Roman Fort and set up by the tribune, Minerva Flavius Severinus. Part of the collections at the Great North Museum in Newcastle.

For #epigraphytuesday a #Roman military belt mount with openwork decoration depicting the Latin word SPES - hope. Found in Biriciana, present-day Weißenburg, Bavaria, dating 2nd/3rd century AD.

Is it a real one or is it a fake? The opinion on the Praeneste fibula has changed many times. The inscription reads MANIOS MED FHE FHAKED NVMASIOI. The brooch has been dated to the 7th century. #EpigraphyTuesday

The sarcophagus of Arnegunde, wife of the merovingian king Clotaire I (511-561) was discovered in the Basilica of Saint-Denis in 1959. A ring found on the skeleton's thumb bears the inscription ARNEGUNDIS, encircling a central monogram expanding to REGINE (queen).
Currently on display at "THE hidden LÄND" in Stuttgart, on loan from Musée d'Archéologie nationale, Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Tabula capuana from Santa Maria Capua Veteres, Italy. It is one of the longest known Etruscan inscriptions from the 5th century BC. Inscribed right to left on a clay tablet. It is on display at the Altes Museum in Berlin, Germany.

For #EpigraphyTuesday a wooden barrel found in a well in the #Roman settlement at Aalen with the name GAIVS COTTIVS FLORENTINVS branded in, probably the merchant or owner of the barrel. Barrels were used for the transport and the storage of wine. This one was reused as a lining for a base of a well. The damp environment has preserved it in a good condition.
For #EpigraphyTuesday and #TilesOnTuesday a 2000 year old joke - a good one! A #Roman tegula (roof tile) with an inscription in Roman cursive:

Trier motto beakers are frequently decorated with toasts to life and wine.
From Trier, dating around 300 AD.
An inscribed golden ring found in the #Roman settlement at Aalen. The ring belonged to a child, the inscription reads CRESCAS, which translates as “may you grow”. A wish every parent still has for their kids today.
For #EpigraphyTuesday a Roman infantry helmet (Weisenau type) with an owner’s inscription formed by punched dots on the neck guard: the helmet belonged to Lucius Lucretius Celer, legionary in the centuria of Gaius Mummius Lolianus of the legio I adiutrix.
Found near Mainz in the River Rhine. Dating 1st century AD.

The inscription may indicate that the deceased was a member of a collegium (association) of raftsmen (ratis = raft).

#EpigraphyTuesday; a bronze legal tablet describing a transfer of property as a debt guarantee (mancipatio fiduciae causa). Dated to the early 1st century CE. Found in the area of Bonanza, now in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional in #Madrid.
For #EpigraphyTuesday, a little preview from tomorrow's upcoming post, part I of Castra Legionis; the bronze Bierzo Edict. Actually two separate edicts issued by Augustus on February 14th and 15th of 15 BCE, the document describes the rights and benefits conferred upon two local communities of the Susarri in return for their loyalty during an uprising in 26 BCE. Found at El Bierzo, now in the Museo de León. (2/2)
