#EPA Proposes Allowing Use of #Dicamba #Weedkiller on Some #Crops
Last year, federal court made certain uses of dicamba illegal after #farmers complained it drifts into neighboring fields, damaging their crops. Ban was scheduled to take full effect this year.
EPA, which reviewed dicamba’s uses and found it poses no risk to human health, is now accepting public comment on its proposed decision. It will then decide whether to greenlight the products.

So, when I first saw this headline, I thought it was about the #UnitedStates making #EPA staffing cuts. Nope! It's the #UK! And this has been going on for a while now!

Thousands of #RiverPollution tests cancelled because of staff shortages

by Jonah Fisher, July 24, 2025

Excerpt: "Staffing problems are nothing new at the EA. In 2023 its chairman Alan Lovell told parliament that it had 'struggled with recruitment and retention of staff'.

"Internal emails obtained by campaign groups #Greenpeace and #Desmog through freedom of information requests were shared with the BBC. They show EA officials discussing the impact of staff departures on testing and saying that others planned to leave.

"One senior official, writing an email to her colleagues, said it was 'not good news I'm afraid' adding 'this isn't where we want to be (again)'.

"Helen Nightingale, who worked at the #EnvironmentAgency as a catchment planner, analysing data from its water quality programme until 2022, says that while she was there she saw a shift of focus away from serious investigation to trying to find 'successes'.

"She also said that morale was low: "The pay is not great – we didn't have pay rises for years due to #austerity.

" 'But a lot people are in it [the EA] because they want to make a difference – and when you're not even getting that - well, what's the point?'

"Documents seen by the BBC show that the work affected by the cuts to testing this year included investigations into the water industry in various parts of the country, and monitoring of #ProtectedAreas including the #RiverWye, which is currently facing a #pollution crisis linked to intensive #ChickenFarming."

"#EPA drafts rule to strike down landmark climate finding."
washingtonpost.com/climate-env

"The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing to rescind a landmark 2009 legal opinion that greenhouse gas emissions put human health at risk, which underpins many of the government’s actions to combat #climate change…A decision to completely rescind the endangerment finding is still a draft proposal and could be subject to change…The draft would also eliminate all resulting limits on motor vehicle greenhouse gas emissions."

The Washington Post · EPA drafts rule to strike down landmark climate findingBy Jake Spring

"The #Trump administration's intent is clear: They want to undermine or overturn the endangerment finding so as to evade #EPA's legal responsibility to address the harms caused by #ClimateChange ... This is simply a giveaway to the #FossilFuel industry and an attempt to undo pollution standards to limit heat-trapping emissions from motor vehicles, from power plants, [and] from oil and gas operations."

👀

The sad excuse for an EPA seeks to be a federal death agency under the Trump Regime.

Per WAPO, the MAGA EPA irresponsibly seeks to put the controversial banned Monsanto herbicide dicamba back on the capitalist US market.

The previously banned drift-prone crop poison is used on cotton and soybean fields, on millions of acres. My state of Vermont farms soybeans, and was involved in having dicamba outlawed twice this decade.

Glenn Connley writes:

‘NSW court blocking largest coalmine expansion in state a big win for the environment

The Australia Institute welcomes reports that the New South Wales Court of Appeal has overturned the approval of one of the largest coal mine expansions in the state.

The court found the Independent Planning Commission failed to take into account the impact of all the carbon pollution associated with the project, including pollution from the exported emissions when the coal is sold and burned overseas.

Mach Energy’s Mount Pleasant coal mine expansion near Muswellbrook is one of the most polluting coal projects that was seeking approval in Australia.’

This opens the way for other Court actions to block all further applications to expand #FossilFuel Extraction in NSW at least. And an excample for other jurisdictions to follw. This legal judgement is well supported by the very recent #ICJ desision on ‘Duty of Care’ where #climateAction is concerned. Perhaps, the Law Courts is filling in where an #EPA Act should.

Joseph Goffman, who led the #air office at the #EPA under the #Biden admin, said the rule would all but certainly face #legal challenges if it is finalized.

He said the #Trump admin’s proposed rule conflicts w/the 2007 #SCOTUS ruling in Massachusetts v. EPA, a landmark case that found for the first time that #GreenhouseGases were a #pollutant under the #CleanAirAct. That led the EPA to make the finding in 2009 that said that 6 greenhouse gases were harming #PublicHealth.

In calling to repeal the #endangerment finding, the draft #EPA rule does not appear to focus on the #science or try to make the case that #FossilFuels aren’t warming the planet.

Instead, it argues that the #EPA overstepped its #legal #authority under the #CleanAirAct by making a broad finding that #GreenhouseGas #emissions endanger the public welfare. It makes the case that the EPA administrator has limited power that apply only to specific circumstances.

Those #regulations, which were based on the #endangerment finding, were a fundamental part of the #Biden admin’s efforts to move the country away from #gasoline-powered vehicles. The transportation sector is the largest source of #GreenhouseGas emissions in the #US.

The #Trump #EPA intends to argue that imposing #climate regulations on #automakers poses the real harm to human #health because it would lead to higher prices & reduced consumer choice…. [what?]

The EPA's water pollution control technologies are decades out of date -- so we took legal action with a coalition of partners.

And in our first big win against the new Trump Administration, we won!

The 9th Circuit has ruled that the #EPA must update its pollution controls for oil refineries, chemical plants & other polluting industries.

This ruling will help stop harmful pollution here in the #BayArea and across the country!
