Cloud migration converts universities “from being a source of technical innovation and knowledge distribution to consumers of services”—a fundamental shift that undermines academic independence and transforms knowledge-producing institutions into service-consuming clients.

@rbreich The greatest geopolitical catastrophe since WWII was democracies' 'coupling' (i.e. financing and empowering) with the military-expansionist CCP dictatorship of China in the first place.

USA handing that dictatorship its "Most Favoured Nation" trade status in 1994 and greenlighting its accession to the WTO in 2000.

They were epoch-making *bi-partisan* mistakes, sponsored by your business/donor interests' greed.

Now both sides of your two-party system have to some extent realized what globally powerful monster you created over the last 30+ years.

Trump is a narcissist-fascist moron and his motley crew of sycophant morons are naturally doing it idiotically, but moaning about the fact that the USA is now engaging "trade war" (instead of rightfully moaning about the disastrous tactics!) feels a little rich.
(The CCP was *always* manipulating trade and tech transfers to its sole benefit)

Democrat administrations since the Tiananmen massacre of 1989 at the latest should all have tried building a *global coalition of democracies* that rewarded democracy and shunned all despots.

Instead putin was emboldened watching how the CCP regime got away with literally everything, just like all other dictators. 🤷‍♂️

This rant wasn't your finest hour.

"Decoupling"? It's possible but extremely unlikely (authors being politic here); "the post-growth field suggests taking a precautionary approach, given the historical record and the rapid narrowing of the window to prevent ecological breakdown. Post-growth, it should be emphasised, does not state that decoupling economic activity from emissions and getting to net zero emissions is impossible, just that it is made harder by economic growth. For energy and material use, which can only be reduced and never brought to zero, the necessary reductions are easier to achieve with post-growth."

so energy and the economy are intrinsically linked, and so are, currently, CO2 emissions.

when the economy grows so do emissions. when the economy is doing badly emissions plateau or even decline.

that is why we are talking about "#decoupling" GDP from emissions by using low-emission technology.

some people say there is a problem with this line of thinking, which i'll explain in a second.

Can economic growth be decoupled from emissions? Yes, for sure, easily even.

Can economic growth be decoupled from environmental degradation in general? Absolutely not. The sheer throughput of materials through the economy, from extraction to waste disposal, must decrease. If we address GHG emissions in isolation from topsoil and biodiversity loss, we will fail to preserve the ecosystems on which we depend for life.

For nearly 200 years, economic #growth and #CarbonEmissions have been closely linked. Mainstream economists advocate for #decoupling, but is that possible?

While some evidence supports decoupling, it's not happening fast enough to meet climate targets.

Alternative proposals include reorienting economies towards human well-being and ecological sustainability, transitioning away from GDP-centric metrics and economic structures.

IEEE Spectrum · A Bold New Plan to Make Cloud Computing More SecureBy Barath Raghavan

Nice essay from Bruce Schneier, "Decoupling for Security, Decoupling our identities from our data and actions could safeguard our secrets",
worth reading especially with regard to data storage and cloudcomputing. Much more is possible then most people think on not-trusted infrastructure.

"The global material #footprint rose from 43 billion metric tons in 1990 to 92 billion in 2017—an increase of 113 per cent. The rate of natural resource extraction has accelerated since 2000. Without concerted political action, it is projected to grow to 190 billion metric tons by 2060. What’s more, the global material footprint is increasing at a faster rate than both population and economic output."
