@passthejoe for the server side I feel like @fedora #CoreOS is pretty close. It’s not exactly rolling in the traditional sense, but it does auto update by default and eventually you will get a major update. We try to get those tested pretty well by CI and the community (the next stream gets updated at Fedora beta time) and make announcements about major changes before they come. There are many many systems that have auto updated their way from 35 all the way through 42.

This past week I went on The Self Hosted Show from Jupiter Broadcasting Studios to talk about @fedora CoreOS edition. Was great to chat with @ironicbadger, Brent Gervais and Chris Fisher, especially since it's been a few years since we were last able to catch up.

Check out the show!

Looks like Fedora’s going to be creating CoreOS images for Hetzner. Very much looking forward to this. If all goes well, it should mean that Small Web sites can be fully self-maintaining with automatic transactional updates.

(The Hetzner bit is important as they also need to be affordable. Although the plan is that there will be multiple VPS providers supported in the future.)

Fedora CoreOS is great for the server use case, but it might be tricky for someone new to it. How does it use rpm-ostree? What is Butane? What are Ignition files? But once you get going, it might be your new favorite way to manage a homelab (and more)!

The Fedora Project is taking rpm-ostree and atomic systems to the next level with our bootc community initiative!

The goal is to evolve Fedora Atomic Desktops, Fedora CoreOS, and Fedora IoT to incorporate bootable containers. You will get the benefit of an atomic OS on your computer while unlocking a world of customization through the cloud native development model.

Fedora Magazine · Get Involved with Fedora Bootable Containers - Fedora MagazineBootable containers make it much simpler to create and collaborate on image-based Fedora systems. Here's how you can get involved.

"Due to a bug in rpm-ostree, the '/etc/[g]shadow[-]' files in Fedora CoreOS, Fedora IoT and Fedora Atomic Desktops have the world-readable bit set.

To fix impacted systems immediately, run the following command as root:
$ chmod --verbose 0000 /etc/shadow /etc/gshadow /etc/shadow- /etc/gshadow-

For more details, notably the full list of affected versions, see: github.com/coreos/rpm-ostree/s "

Looks like Vultr has it but it’s too expensive. We’d have to charge at least €25/mo instead of ~€10/mo for a Small Web site with Hetzner to make the same ~€5/mo to try and make Small Technology Foundation sustainable.

And I really want Small Web sites to be affordable so folks can experiment and play with them.

(A few notes:

- Setting up a server and then installing CoreOS is out of the question. Small Web sites have to be set up in under a minute.

- Must be affordable. We need to be sustainable while not charging more than €10/mo.)

- EU-based.

Right now, it seems I’ll have to go with Ubuntu although I really don’t want to as I want the rpm-ostree auto-updates in CoreOS to make the sites zero admin as possible.)
