Hey, dog people!

So, I go for long walks around my neighborhood. One route I've been taking since about the first year of the pandemic. Nice woodsy area. Today as I was passing one house a fair-sized dog noticed me and started barking, then ran down the 20 yards of their driveway, across the 2 lane public street (barking all the way), and jumped up. I instinctively gave it a forearm. It shredded the long sleeve (which wasn't buttoned and was flapping loose) on that arm, and broke the skin a tiny bit.

This is the second time this dog has done this. First time was about a week ago.

The owner was up at the house and made it about half way down his driveway before the dog responded to his calling. He shouted to me to wait while he got the dog into the house. He apologized to me, said the dog has never done this before (ah, but there was last week, I told him; he was also outside that time). Isn't a new dog "he's just very protective" (enough to charge all the way down that long driveway and across the full width of the street to come at me).

He says the dogs are never out unleashed unless he's there with them (which does seem to be the case, as far as I can tell).

He'd be happy to buy me a new shirt, where did I live, he'll drop it off, etc., etc.

Owner's suggestion is that if I see them outside when I'm nearing their house I should shout up to him and he'll restrain the dog. (will my shout alert the dog that there's someone -- me -- down there to chase?)

Anyway, I don't know dogs. What would you folks suggest? Do you think I should....

1) start carrying a baseball bat, a length of 2x4, or a piece of pipe

2) buy some bear repellant spray and carry it with me

3) carry a spray bottle of vinegar

4) in any case, keep walking and trying to ignore the dog (or does that provoke dogs?)

5) start running away before the dog has a chance to bark (which seems the worst thing I could do)

6) turn and try to make myself look big by standing tall and raising both arms watching the dog as it approaches (or is that a signal to attack me?)

7) face the dog and start screaming and dancing like a crazy person (are dogs put off by that sort of thing?)

8) call the local police (before I get the replacement shirt? before we try this shouting at him as I approach his house?)

9) give it all us as a bad job and find a new place to walk

Any help or suggestions appreciated. Thanks!
