Those of you who live "up north" may recognise this type of pea, Carlin. I've been looking for an alternative to chickpeas and these Black badger types have a whopping 23g/100g of protein.
Going to have a go at growing this year, once I think of a way of keeping th rats and pigeons away.

Morning all. Hope everyone is well. Thank goodness for more daylight hours. Time to catch up on the allotment. The potatoes have been chitting nicely while I was away. I will be sowing some greens and flowers this week. Tempted to plant the tatties next week. Missed the boat for chillies and aubergines so will be buying them from a nursery. What have you been sowing this week?

Popped down to renew my membership of the local horticultural society and picked up the show schedule for 2025. I'm not really competitive and know how difficult it is to grow multiples of anything that fit the show criteria, but with 5 mature rhubarb plants on our combined plots, all the same variety, surely an entry is worth a shot?

New rule. Whatever amount of runner beans Mr M picks, and as he likes them shredded, I will process half for freezing and the rest have to be given away.
Variety Firestorm which is a cross between a runner and a climbing bean. It has a smooth exterior, doesn't require stringing, and in my humble opinion, a much better taste than your normal runner bean

What a lovely day here today. The plot is looking pretty tidy by my standards, although the squashes are just getting going. I lifted the onions, loose leaf lettuce and beetroot and replanted with cos lettuce. It's only a half sized plot and about a third given over to wildlife but what it lacks in size it gives in variety. I aim for small batches of different things and because some beds are planted 3 times I can squeeze in about 40 different types of veg plus 6 permanent fruits.

Mr M grows our potatoes on his plot but I get impatient waiting for him to give the go ahead to harvest them. So this year planted a few earlies so I can enjoy them, well, early. Dibbed a hole, popped the seed potato in and mulched with grass cuttings. Harvesting does put an end to my no dig bed but I reckon if I rotate between two beds there will be minimum disruption to the soil. Tubers are small but squeaky clean, perfect for new potato salad. Variety is Casablanca.

Tomatoes sown. 9 varieties in all, 5 seeds to a cell. A separate tray for the crimson crush blight resistant for outside on the allotment. The rest are a mix of tried and tested and new to me varieties. Spares will go to friends. Checked last years diary and our last frost was mid April, with reliable night time temperatures over 10 C from mid May. They will be large plants by then and take up a lot of indoor space but I love growing them.

Yesterday I started building a deep bed for my next attempt at growing sweet potatoes. Filling it with twigs, leaves and kitchen scraps. My friend has promised me the waste from her chickens next time she cleans them out. Will top it with a layer of compost and build a frame cover. Starting the slips soon, using my tuber in a bag of compost in the airing cupboard. Will plant some early leaf stuff and onion sets to utilize the space while the slips are filling out.
