Yesterday https://last.fm/ (@lastfm) emailed their year in review reports, which they called #Playback24 and Last.Year.

Kudos to them for waiting until the new year to do so, and breaking with the pattern of services prematurely posting year in review summaries.¹

They’re also available on the web, without requiring a native mobile app to view.

The page title calls it your #YearInMusic, and the URL your #ListeningReport.

It has many interesting elements, from various top listened lists (artist, album, track), to what percent of 2024 listens (which they call scrobbles) were new artists, albums, and tracks.

Their “Top Tags” time chart is quite cool. Fascinating to see the differences in music listening over the seasons and the whole year.

The report has many interactive features, so it will take me some time to figure out how to save, export, and/or republish my listening report on my personal #indieweb site.

For now I used Firefox to save the page as an .html page to my laptop, and was quite impressed with how much of the information was available in that one file. Much more than #Spotify’s #Wrapped.

That’s step 1. Step 2 is figuring out a good way to blog at least some of it.

When my streaming service moved to giving me insights such as
"You like... 🥁 ... #jazz
the disillusionment about what #MachineLearning can do hit me hard (given they had previously offered things such as "Japanese Nu Jazz" or so).

I was delighted to have recent analysis telling me that over the year my focal listening moved from
"Smooth Instrumental Nu Jazz"
over
"Nerdy Crossover Jazz"
to
"Serotonin Permanent Wave Indie".

#SpotifyWrapped was underwhelming this year, I thought Mastodon's was more fun!

Anyway, those who were here last year know that Moxxi has a Spotify account that runs almost non-stop when I'm not traveling. This year, I let it play randomly and didn't force any specific song, other than her main playlist, which definitely acted as a massive seed. Read the alt for each screenshot to get my opinion. I've already started testing out other streaming services so, count your days, Spotify.

To be fair, this one is just like buying the song, and I can do it all over again next year. On the flip side, it means you need to stream the same song 400 times to make up for not purchasing it.

I was sort of expecting it because I could tell that Spotify was going back to known songs a lot. What a disappointment, though. You just let it do its thing and takes you nowhere but where you've been before.

So that means that there's a loooong tail to the number of artists that Spotify fed Moxxi over the last 13 months. There's usually a playlist that I should be able to comb through. I've heard that there are a lot of fake artists owned by Spotify now and I'm wondering how many are amongst those nearly 2000 artists.
