One thing I miss about Twitter is being able to ask a question like "Did ANZAC troops on the Western Front in WWI paint kiwi or other symbols on their Brodie helmets?" and actually get relatively regularly expert input.
The Fedi rocks. But it's very fractured

Reposting my #Introduction because there's a flurry of new folks -- and I'm an eternal optimist at finding fellow Welsh writing in English peeps. So here goes:
I work as the Community Outreach Officer for the Welsh Dictionary of Biography, more collquially called the #Bywgraffiadur, at the #NationalLibraryOfWales. Our goal is to close representational gaps and set the Dictionary on a course of recording the diverse lives of historical Welsh people in all their facets. https://biography.wales/
Otherwise, I'm working on #WelshWritingInEnglish mostly from the long #C19. Other research interests include #TravelWriting, particularly illustrated accounts and the history of the #VisitorsBook. I'm also into #PublicHistory and community outreach, sometimes abt #PortHeritage, #WW1 German submarine warfare and its effects on Welsh communities.
I share longer #WiP here: https://bydbach.hcommons.org/
Toots will be mostly in #English, but occasionally also in #Deutsch and #Cymraeg.

The book lists all 89 men and includes information about their lives, their families, and the communities they came from. Many of the men were experienced seamen but some had only recently been conscripted into service. #WW1 #RoyalNavy #Orkney
My War Wolf for Trench Crusade is complete. Very happy with how he turned out, especially the gore. He's a messy eater.

On a similar cheery note, here is the latest album by #German black/death band, #Kanonenfieber. As old contemptibles already know, the band's theme is World War One, and "Die Urkatastrophe" sticks to a winning formula. War? What is it good for? Sick riffs & crushing songs.

Today's video for December is the scandalous story of the Loch Doon Aerial Gunnery School.
During the First World War, the British Army attempted to weaponise flight. That was certainly the idea behind the school, but a willful blindness to the conditions at Loch Doon led to a huge waste of public money.
