THE AFGHAN WHIGS
Gentlemen
2025 U.S. reissue
Canary Yellow #vinyl
This is part of the same series of “Elektra At 75” reissues from this year as the copy of Superdrag’s Regretfully Yours that I recently posted.
I have the “Gentlemen at 21” reissue of this from 2014. I bought this because everyone’s said it sounds really good. And it does.
However, it does NOT sound better than the 2014. It’s far less dynamic sounding to my ears, but if you can’t get your hands on one of those, this is a very nice entry level pressing for those who want a vinyl version.
This album is still a stone-cold stunner, and the first album in a run of three that helped define the #90s for me. I find Black Love and 1965 to be equally epic.
We still occasionally play “Debonair” in our live sets, and we fucking slay it every time.
When I bought Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut in a second hand record store in Austin I was surprised to find what was lurking in the jacket along with the record.
Rest in Peace, Ozzy.

DESMOND DEKKER
Black and Dekker
1980 Canada pressing
Those who have followed me since the beginning know that I have an infatuation with #reggae music. Particularly the more obscure & fringe-y reggae. I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 reggae records, and if I see ANY interesting reggae in my travels, I buy it.
I first heard Desmond Dekker & The Aces as a kid and instantly fell in love with it.
Bob Marley owes his entire career to Desmond Dekker, and regularly said so throughout his life, as Dekker was the one who brought Marley to Leslie Kong’s attention.
I’ve yet to procure any of the #70s Dekker albums for my collection, cuz I just haven’t seen any. They’re not particularly expensive, but if I order them on Discogs, they become expensive with shipping.
This particular one is great entry level DD if you’re a newbie.
Now on deck, this is with something of a heavy heart. I grew up listening to Sabbath and have now just read of the passing of Ozzy. Music has lost someone very very special indeed.
This imho is their greatest ever live performance. It's raw Sabbath.. unapologetically -Just as Sabbath was meant to be. 1970 in Paris was as good as it ever was.
CLARENCE PLOOF
Cross-Canada Guitar
#1960s Canada pressing
A Canadian legend!
Some killer, twangy, reverb-drenched guitar badassery on a bright Tuesday morning.
When Clarence Ploof did push-ups, he didn’t push up.
The Earth pushed AWAY.
That’s how fucking badass Clarence Ploof was.
A reminder that iconic Scots author, Irvine Welsh, will be having a new book and vinyl event at our chums, Thorne Records, on Friday 25th!

No real good reason why I shouldn't keep listening to Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler Zavala compositions all day, right? If only I had #DelousedInTheComatorium
Next on deck, we're starting the day with David Crosby, Jerry Garcia and others. This is a great live performance from 1970. The music and lyrics are very emblematic of a time and place, yet so much retains relevance now. There's also some wonderfully understated, exploratory guitar work sprinkled in as well. This one is very much worth having if you're a Crosby or Garcia fan.
There is a moment or two wherein I felt each was trying to outshine the other, yet the performance retains coherence and harmony. IMHO, a must-have album.
I have a large collection of #electronic and #computer #music #vinyl #records. I had a radio show on FM on the subject for about a decade. So it is always exciting to find something I don't have, especially early stuff. Found this 10" boxed "Music from Mathematics" from 1960, bell labs. Much more rare than 1962 Decca 12". Never seen it before. Found in a local shop, of all places, hiding inside a vinyl carry case.
