Sweeping layoffs of federal employees have struck the program responsible for controlling the invasive sea lamprey that threatens fish across the Great Lakes, the earth’s largest freshwater ecosystem. Among hundreds of US Fish and Wildlife Service employees terminated this month were 12 members of the Great Lakes sea lamprey control program. arstechnica.com/science/2025/0

“Weighing in at just half an ounce, black-capped chickadees rely on gathering and storing large quantities of seeds in the fall to survive harsh winters. Research shows that these tiny but tough birds have incredible memories, allowing them to remember thousands of hiding places so they can find this food later. I recently joined #PasoPacifico #MARN #USFWS in search of nesting yellow-naped Amazon #parrots in a mangrove forest considered a parrot hideout. This critically endangered bird has been extirpated from most of Eastern #ElSalvador. We didn't find the nests, but last week, a community ranger (a former hunter) contacted me to say he was in touch with the poacher who knows where the nests are. We will soon meet with the poacher to discuss alternatives to poaching and their choice to help a species.

The second petition urges #USFWS to implement specific "management measures" for remaining wolf populations across the lower 48 states more broadly.

We strongly oppose these petitions and call on the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (#USFWS) to deny these requests and uphold #protections for #wolves under the #EndangeredSpeciesAct in these areas and its surrounding regions.

Hopefully the #USFWS will stop dithering, and protect the #BiStateSageGrouse this time. This merry-go-round of agency failures and court smackdowns is not helping the birds.

“Maybe the third time will be the charm for getting this population segment the protection it so clearly deserves,” said Laura Cunningham, California director of the Western Watersheds Project.“None of the science shows that the bi-state birds have benefited from the service’s dithering."

Las Vegas SunBi-state sage grouse considered for threatened status, againFor the third time in a decade, federal wildlife officials are contemplating whether the bi-state sage grouse deserves protection under the Endangered Species Act. Conservationists blame “political gamesmanship” for leaving the bird in regulatory limbo since 2013. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said ...

"The service issued the kill order after 13 livestock carcasses were found.."

The whole story is that there were calves, in JANUARY, on public lands, that allegedly the wolves killed a full-grown healthy bull, and that these allotments have been a death trap for #MexicanWolves for years. Without the context, #USFWS's position here appears justified. With the context, it's same old, same old, sacrificing #EndangeredSpecies for the #Livestock industry.

Arizona RepublicFederal agency kills 'Rusty,' a Mexican gray wolf blamed in livestock deathsBy Jake Frederico

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (#USFWS) has gotten a lot of mileage in the media for rejecting the #EndangeredSpeciesAct #Coyote petition to protect #MexicanWolves. They even put out their own press release, like they were gloating about their unwillingness to protect #Lobos.

Wev. We're still here and we're not going to stop fighting to protect and recover #Wolves.

Idaho's wolf management plan? Kill 2/3 of all the wolves in the state, give ranchers carte blanche, and allowing sadistic hunters to kill wolves in a variety of cruel ways. In sum: bringing them as close to the edge of extinction as they can get away with. #USFWS needs to #ProtectWolves under the #EndangeredSpeciesAct #ASAP!
