Today I saw these old style #camellias while walking in downtown #BatonRouge #Louisiana. I was struck by the rose like flowers. I thought they would be a good topic for #bloomscrolling. Since they are cultivated, they probably are #gardening material as well. Camellias are such great flowers, because they are evergreen and bloom in the late winter when little else is growing. #Bromeliad fans might notice a few sprigs of #Tillandsia growing on the stems of the bush.
An amazing video from #KewGardens on using motorised paragliders to sample and study plants in fragile remote desert habitats that would be damaged by vehicles.

Basically a #solarpunk story waiting to be written.

This morning I put my new planter together. I've had some of the plants for a long time, some I propagated myself, and other were purposefully collected over the last little while.
With it being really shitty outside, I decided to do something creative and put the tropical planter together I have been thinking of for a while.
Some of the plants are from cuttings, others I've had for a while, and they weren't happy on their own. The microclimate of the planter should help, especially in the ultra dry winter months. I have several epiphytes in there, for which I have a soft spot.
The barrel is half a proper bourbon barrel I got on a sale.
I gave the airplant a trim, or killed it, before the weekly soak. I have no idea what I'm doing, but it's been here 6 years or so
Presenting: the epiphyte shelf. Roots are expressly forbidden here. #HouseplantsOfMastodon #StaghornFern #AirPlants #Tillandsia
