I found this In Our Time episode on Social Darwinism interesting, not least for the depressing revelation that Darwin himself was a Social Darwinist. I thought they could have run more with the point about Marx also being influenced by Social Darwinism but replacing the idea of conflict between individuals with conflict between classes.

Speaking of science... In 1809 on #ThisDayInHistory, #CharlesDarwin was born. His long-since proven model of organic #evolution has often been misused to justify power structures, but #socialdarwinism is not actually Darwinian and shouldn't be associated with him.
Survival of the fittest is not a term created by #CharlesDarwin to explain successful biological adaptations, it was invented by #HerbertSpencer to add a gilded patina of #science to his notion of #SocialDarwinism, created solely to justify social and #EconomicInequality and oppression by the wealthy of the #worker.
Nothing anywhere, for anyone, has fundamentally changed.
