For those (all 2 of you) wondering what happened to my #snac instance, I decided that the limitations while initially well intentioned, were now less limiting due to the scope of the project and features being added over time - meaning it was almost back to a full-featured platform and I might as well be back on something like this.

So #Akkoma was, for me, the logical choice spin up. I see in the documentation it has #ejabberd integration, so might yet utilise that so I can sign into #xmpp with the same account, which would be kinda cool.

I am running both #prosody and #ejabberd for testing and am unsure which I prefer as yet. Possibly ejabberd for the webmin, which is quite nice.

YES!!! #AVIF #FTW!!!

Just FYI, nsxiv, imv, and swayimg all support AVIF as well, although imv did oddly have a glitch with one of the images I tested it with. I'd never seen that happen before.

According to some people I've spoken with, JPEG is still king for high-fidelity images and minimizing loss upon re-compression, but AVIF just totally whips the llama's posterior when it comes to relatively high fidelity at crazy low file sizes (high compression).

AVIF is often noticeably better quality than #WebP at the same (low) file size and resolution, and parsecs beyond what JPEG can do with high compression factors.

If only the fediverse supported it!!! :(

We barely have WebP support (mostly on #GtS, maybe #snac (haven't tried it)), not on #Mastodon.

I announce the release of version 2.77 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It just reverts a feature included in previous version; links in posts were also included as attachments, but, while harmless and on spec, it made posts look ugly in some platforms, and what the world doesn't need is more ugly things.

I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.76 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

Added Webmention support for links (Markdown-style or direct) written in a post.

Added new command-line options for list maintenance.

Display custom emoji in more places (contributed by dandelions).

Mastodon API: fixed infinite scroll in many clients (thanks to cheeaun for giving me the clue), added /api/v1/accounts/.../lists endpoint (contributed by dandelions).

Email notifications can now be sent via libcurl SMTP instead of spawning the /usr/sbin/sendmail program. To use this new feature, some additional server configuration is needed, see snac(8) (contributed by shtrophic).

just moved my website to another server before I move. I've successfully rsynced my snac directory and reinstalled it on the new server with no apparent breakage.

#snac #snac2

edit: most of my posts are missing. I thought they were there after the move, but maybe it was just browser cache? I'll have to hook up the old drive to my laptop and see if I can resync

My relay instance for the #Fediverse evolved in a great way - more than 120 instances are already connected to boost your posts across the Fediverse.

If you're running #snac / #snac2, #Mastodon, #Pleroma or any other software on the #ActivityPub protocol that supports relay instances - feel free to join the relay! Hopefully #GoToSocial also supports relay services soon! Of course #IPv6 is supported (for IPV6 only instances).

I've just enjoyed this fascinating conversation between @firesidefedi@social.firesidefedi.live and @stefano@bsd.cafe, where the latter explains how he planted the seed of the incredibly friendly, great and extense community that is the BSD Cafe. Open source, owning you own data and the importance of interconnecting people is talked about here. Of course, Stefano also talked about https://fedimeteo.com/, his great project that makes weather information available to the whole Fediverse; this makes me, as the developer of #snac (one of the pieces of software that operates Fedimeteo), also a bit proud of being a part of.

As Stefano says, "you can't describe passion", but you can feel it from his words.
