Flipboard News Desk<p>A judge has ruled that Alex Jones' far-right platform, Infowars, can be sold to help pay the families of Sandy Hook shooting victims. Last year, The Onion had won a court-mandated auction for Infowars' parent company but this was halted by a federal bankruptcy judge. This new ruling paves the way for The Onion to revive its bid. Jones has yet to pay a cent of the more than $1 billion in damages he owes Sandy Hook families for repeated defamatory claims that the massacre was a hoax. On his show on Wednesday, he railed against the families, but says he will keep broadcasting under a different brand. Weltschmerz à Gogo<p>A state judge in Texas Wednesday ordered Infowars' assets to be turned over to a newly-appointed state receiver, who will sell them to pay the families of the Connecticut children killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. They won a $1.3 billion defamation case against Jones after he spread bogus [conspiracy theories] that the shooting never happened and the grieving families were actors. His listeners harassed the families for years.</p><p>The move paves the way for the receiver — or sheriffs — to start the process of seizing cash and property owned by Infowars and its parent company, Free Speech Systems, within days. Satirical news publication The Onion has bought Alex Jones' Infowars at a bankruptcy auction backed by families of Sandy Hook Elementary families who are owed more than $1 billion in defamation judgments by Jones. Infowars' website, social media accounts, studio in Austin, Texas, trademarks and video archive are now owned by The Onion, whose CEO Bryce P. Tetraeder said: “No price would be too high for such a cornucopia of malleable assets and minds. And yet, in a stroke of good fortune, a formidable special interest group has outwitted the hapless owner of InfoWars (a forgettable man with an already-forgotten name) and forced him to sell it at a steep bargain: less than one trillion dollars.” Here's more from @AssociatedPress, plus The Onion's full statement.
