Stillness on a Lichen Limb

Charlie and I were out and about again this morning when I snapped a photo of another Mississippi Kite (Ictinia mississippiensis). Like the others I've shared over the past few days, I didn’t realize what I’d photographed until I got home and reviewed the images.

Steel Feather, Still Sky

Charlie and I just got back from our Monday morning walk. Along the way, I spotted a bird off in the distance and snapped a photo—not knowing at the time what kind of bird it was. I’ve included the original image to show how far away it was. For reference, I was using a 560mm lens, which offers about 11× magnification.

Using digital tools, I cropped and zoomed in to get a clearer view. The second image gives a much better look at the bird itself—a Mississippi Kite (Ictinia mississippiensis), a striking and elegant bird of prey.

While Crested Caracara is not the official eagle of Mexico or even an eagle (caracaras are falcons), there used to be a popular legend that this was Mexico's national eagle

i think it's because these birds are so familiar & confident, you encounter them on their road patrols where they sometimes do pick up snakes

this youngster was photo'd on a lawn in Costa Rica

Guardian of Quiet Air

Here’s a mystery bird—Avis Mystica. I don’t recall taking this photo, but clearly, I did. It was probably something I noticed while Charlie and I were out wandering. I love the composition, though the detail isn’t quite what I’d hoped for. It appears to be some kind of raptor—possibly a Mississippi Kite (Ictinia mississippiensis). But let’s be honest—that’s what we called a WAG in the Army: a wild-ass guess.

Male Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) perched on the top of a weathered wooden signpost. it's facing slightly downward, mid-step, with its black talons gripping the wood and its plumage showing mottled reddish-brown upper parts and barred underparts.
Shot at Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside Wildlife Trust Brockholes in Samlesbury, near Preston, UK.
