“Posterity! You will never know, how much it cost the present Generation, to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make a good Use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it.”
John Adams wrote this to Abigail Adams on April 26, 1777 in a moment of despair and hopelessness. It was eight months after the Declaration had been signed, and there were years to go before the war would end.

John Adams wrote this to Abigail Adams on April 26, 1777 in a moment of despair and hopelessness. It was eight months after the Declaration had been signed, and there were years to go before the war would end. Adams felt people were not rising to the challenge, writing, “I am more sick and more ashamed of my own Countrymen, than ever I was before.” Spring was coming and Adams wanted to be here, at home on his farm in Quincy with his wife and children, not in Philadelphia where his efforts might land him on the gallows. Despite the personal risk and sacrifice, he persevered and devoted his life to advancing freedom no matter the cost.
Are we making good use of our freedom? Federal troops called into our cities, redrawing voting districts to circumvent the will of the people, our most vulnerable neighbors losing their healthcare, dehumanizing immigrants, silencing diverse voices, defunding arts, culture, and education, supporting genocide?
We find ourselves in a moment of despair and hopelessness. We may feel ashamed of our country and fellow countrymen. We don’t know when the madness will calm, or when and if justice will prevail. But if we are once again willing to take pains, make sacrifices, and commit ourselves to the highest ideals of this country, we might yet preserve and advance our freedom for future generations.
