YES! So proud this is happening in my region. #AlberniClayoquot Congrats to #Nuuchanulth language keepers and learners!

This is also the launch of a *brand new* transit service! The West Coast has never had public Transit before. It has been years since the private bus companies (formerly Greyhound) severely cut trips.

It's very hard to get around without a car. I am hoping a connecting service will be created to get people from the #Hwy4 junction to #PortAlberni

CBCIndigenous language now included on Ucluelet bus stop signs — a first for B.C. Transit  | CBC NewsB.C. Transit says this is the first time an Indigenous language has been included on its signs anywhere within its system, but it does plan to work with other communities to include local language in other communities.

I have a recurring annual calendar appointment for March 16. Today is the 102nd anniversary of Comox-Alberni MP A.W. Neill's first speech in his 21 year career in the House of Commons (1921-45) where he called for a "white British Columbia”.

Neill was a white supremacist, anti-Asian racist, and one of the loudest voices for Japanese Internment. He was also an Indian Agent dealing with First Nations and Residential Schools on Vancouver Island's West Coast.

In 2021 his name was removed from a local school but he remains honoured with a street name.

I will continue reminding people of this until that honour is removed.

(A full report about him starts on page 82 of the City of Port Alberni Agenda from January 23, 2017)

If you want to learn and hear from First Nations women in this part of the world and how they're regaining their space, this is a great article about Nuu-cha-nulth women:

“Nuu-chah-nulth women are powerful, strong, and not afraid to take up the space meant for them. This is how Mariah Charleson (łučinƛcuta), a Hesquiaht member who was recently elected the nation’s chief councillor, describes the women of Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations.”

Hey all, I'm trying to raise $1000 for our local shelter society that provides refuge for Women and Gender Diverse people fleeing violence in #PortAlberni and around the West Coast and #Nuuchanulth Territories on Vancouver Island.
You can donate to Sage Haven Society using this link: walk.w-ith.us/chris
Thank you! 🙏
