"The Vistra fire in Moss Landing caught everyone by surprise. What we can learn from it?” —David Schmalz, #MontereyCountyWeekly cover story

"On Feb. 13, 2022, a similar incident occurred at Vistra’s Moss 100 facility, and this time, both #Vistra facilities were taken offline.

"Meanwhile, PG&E’s 182.5-megawatt Elkhorn facility came online in April 2022. Unlike both Vistra facilities, the Elkhorn’s batteries were not in buildings – they were in an array of 256 Tesla Megapacks on 33 concrete slabs.

In the early morning of Sept. 20 of that year, just over five months later, a fire broke out in one of #Tesla Megapacks at the facility, prompting the closure of Highway 1 and a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. Though the fire only burned for six hours, the orders remained in effect until just before 7pm due to the risk of toxic smoke inhalation.”

“The EPA tested for one of the pollutants that measures air quality index – particulate size. This is what the Monterey Bay Air Resource District (MBARD) does when it produces an evaluation of air quality. Neither agency tests for heavy metals. Heavy metals testing was done by Dr. Ivano Aiello of the Moss Landing Marine Labs around the Elkhorn Slough and by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control with Monterey County Environmental Health Department.”—Supervisor Glenn Church, District 2, Monterey County Board of Supervisors mailchi.mp/co/supervisor-churc

#SJSU #MossLanding Marine Laboratories has conducted testing for heavy metals:

"...unusually high concentrations of heavy-metal #nanoparticles... at Elkhorn Slough... following the recent fire at the nearby #Vistra Power Plant's li-ion battery storage facility... within a radius of approximately 2 miles... measured a dramatic increase (hundreds to thousand-fold) of the three heavy metals Nickel, Manganese and Cobalt."

"When I took office two years ago, I accepted several tours of the #Vistra facility, including a tour inside the building that burned. The facility and its safety systems appeared impressive. I was personally given the guarantee that a fire similar to the one that occurred in 2022 at the neighboring PG&E / #Tesla operation could not happen at Vistra. We know that is not true. This disaster is worse.

"There has been some great #news reporting on this story, but there have also been some errors. There is a great deal of #misinformation being spread. That is because there are a lot of unknowns. I would urge everyone to doublecheck every source."

So, when I see catastrophic events like the #BESSFires or widespread #PFASContamination in #BrunswickMaine, the first thing I think of is, "Where are the wildlife going to hide? How is this event going to affect them and the nearby #ecosystems?"

"The #ElkhornSlough Reserve is closed until further notice due to potential health risks from a fire at the #MossLanding Battery Storage Plant that started on January 16.

"The area has been evacuated and will remain closed until emergency services determines that air quality is no longer hazardous.

"Elkhorn Slough is a cherished #ecosystem of tremendous importance to #MontereyBay and beyond. We appreciate all the efforts of local, county, and state authorities and emergency response teams, as well as the outpouring of concern from the community regarding health impacts for people and #wildlife in the area.

"We have not yet seen reports of any documented negative environmental impacts from this incident, but it is too early to know. The Elkhorn Slough Reserve conducts robust monitoring programs for water quality, habitats, and wildlife. We will be looking closely at impacts from this incident in the future, and will collaborate with partner agencies in their monitoring efforts."

Last night there was a fire in Moss Landing, CA wherein a phase 1 LG Lithium Ion BESS (battery energy storage system) burned.

A water-based mitigation system did not work as designed, Vistra's senior director of community affairs Brad Watson said at this morning's news conference. Watch the Moss Landing Power Plant Official Press Conference here:

@Thebratdragon It seems the #Tesla batteries were involved in the fire. And it seems that #PacificGasAndElectric also had a hand in "ensuring safety" at the facility. And they want to keep #DiabloCanyonNuclearPlant going? smh

"This is not the plant's first fire; it experienced another in September 2022, when an individual battery storage unit rose in flames.

"Operations resumed in December 2022 after the Energy Safety Response Group (ESRG), a third-party energy safety consultant, finalized a review of the situation. PG&E, in conjunction with Tesla, the battery provider, 'implemented corrective actions and conducted extensive system testing,' as PG&E announced.

"The exact cause of the current incident at the plant remains uncertain. Still, ESRG's 2022 report identified that last year's fire was sparked by 'an equipment installation issue resulting in water ingress caused the battery's cells to overheat and catch fire,' according to the press release.

"Due to the blaze, #Highway1 near the site has been shut down, as reported by KION concerning the California Highway Patrol."
