Some new paints arrived! I'm looking forward to giving these a try and trying to paint in the John Blanche style. It's been a long time since I've used The Army Painter paints, but I've heard they have gotten a lot better in recent years.

Mercifully, the universe felt sorry for me. And these arrived today. So I’m at least excited about one thing.

Two paint sets from The Army Painter. Both have a piece of John Blanche’s Art on the cover and are volumes of paints designed in tandem with him.

I hear legendary #Artist #JohnBlanche is in hospital right now, so sending him plenty of (fittingly #GrimDark) best wishes.

The front cover of Codex: Sisters of Battle, published by Games Workshop in 1997, for Warhammer 40,000, 2nd Edition.

In the foreground, we see a white haired and gothically attractive cybernun, wearing slender, ornate black, red and gold power armour. She is looking directly at the viewer, her left eye replaced with a bulky, archaic implant.

In her left hand, itself covered with a white vambrace and gauntlet, she is carrying a sword which looks strangely high tech and yet medieval at the same time. In her right, she holds a bulky heavy pistol, with black and yellow warning chevrons on its side.

For some reason, her armour has high heels and her right foot is posed dramatically atop a pile of bones and a skull.

In the background, we see scores of other battle nuns advancing into war, including one firing a heavy bolter (imagine a cannon firing explosive rockets). A great many baroque war banners are held aloft. Fire, and a dark orange sky streaked with black smoke suggest both battle and lots of flames, in the form of sconces, torches and even burning heretics.

Also in the background are a large gaggle of priests and clerics, who are simultanously ragged, futuristic, styled in the manner of the middle ages and faintly unhinged looking, including one who's wearing a blindfold, one in red robes and a pointed red hood, and one armed with a cross between a chainsaw & a sword. They are not nice people.

The image projects power, horror, decadence and a future gone very wrong.

#Artist #MarkGibbons pays tribute to the legendary #JohnBlanche on the announcement of the latter's retirement this week.

Artist Mark Gibbons pays tribute to legend John Blanche on his Facebook page, originally at 3.18 AM, 03/06/2023.

He says (I've had to edit this down owing to the Alt Text word count. PM me for the full content, if you're interested):

"John Blanche retired from Games Workshop this week.

"Not a decision I think he was happy to take, but one forced upon him due to ill health. Nevertheless, 40 years manning the bellows of the mighty Warhammer art forges (whilst simultaneously swinging the hammer himself) should be celebrated.

"Although artists beyond number have contributed to the 'Grimdark' over the decades, John's singular vision, with its baroque eccentricities, defined the look and mapped the perilous landscape for the rest of us to follow...

"...I could've shared any one of a thousand illustrations to accompany these words but settled on this particular Space Wolves piece because it's the perfect example of the army shot described above. When I began working on the 2nd Edition Space Wolves codex, this was the piece I filled my inspiration vat from.

"I won't be wishing John a happy retirement because I hope he never stops working. I hope he continues to make art and share it with the rest of us, and I hope he continues to reimagine Citadel miniatures in his inimitable Blanchitsu style.

"I trust that this is not the end of John Blanche's career, just the beginning of a new chapter, and that is something I will heartily celebrate."
