Just finished reading the whole collection of HP Lovecraft's fiction, and it was in some ways really interesting and enlightening. Not necessarily in the ways he may have WANTED, mind you, but still...

Gracious, did that man love to read himself write like some people like to hear themselves talk. And the racism could get real unbearable at times. But overall, I can see why his world-building and eerie atmospheres are still beloved to this day.

Also, now I finally get some of the references in Lovecraft-based media I like, so that's fun.

I’m very behind reading fiction magazines, about a year behind in fact. Interzone 297 was up to its usual exacting standards, with some excellent non-fiction (although, am I alone in NOT wanting book reviews to include a detailed synopsis?) Fav story: ‘Lights of the New World’ by Paul E. Franz

Going to do some book browsing tomorrow for my birthday. 🥳

Might buy a horror novel or short stories. I’m thinking Laird Barron, Christopher Buehlman, Isabel Cañas, Mariana Enriquez, Catriona Ward.

Also thinking of a graphic novel with some fresh and exciting art.

I like poetry, and I’m currently very interested in the possibilities of poetry and illustration. Something like Mervyn Peake, Julian Peters.

Anyone have any suggestions?

One of the great things about reading anthologies of horror fiction is spotting the bit in the story where the protagonist has a choice to make and makes the patently stupid one; in the case of a story I finished recently it was replying "Why yes of course" to some randomer saying "I see you are reading a book about witchcraft - would you like to come back to my place and take part in a real life magic ritual?"

I'm a big fan of the short form for horror so this format was made for me. Four interconnected stories that ramped up the creep factor.

A literary agent tries to track down a client who has dropped off the grid while working on a difficult screen adaptation.

Two bag men accept a job to deliver a rare book, with a few strange stipulations on how the book is to be handled and transported.

A boy with a strange pop-up book and few friends invites classmates to his birthday party.

A man tries to understand what happened to a former colleague after she received a series of emails with strange audio attachments.
