any tips on microphones / preamps for field recording very quiet outdoor environments?

my Zoom H4n (from 2008 or so?) seems to have quite a high noise floor (after digital amplification in Audacity) when the rec level is set to maximum and the environment is almost silent.

what are people using these days?

the H4n has a 3.5mm socket marked EXT MIC on the back, but I've never used it, and there are two line-level (afaik?) inputs (combined 1/4" jack/xlr sockets) on the bottom that I've used to record mixing desk and room audio simultaneously for live gigs (no complaints for that use case).

To my #Blind friends and other #H1Essential recorder users, I'm looking for advice on how you manage your recordings. Specifically, what's your processing chain for saving them?

For context, I'm just recording everyday activities like conversations and playing with my son, Liam. I've tried normalizing everything to -16 or -14 LUFS, but I'm finding that some clips are still distorted and clipping.

Could you share any tips on what processing I can do to make these recordings more listenable before saving them as #Wav or #Flac? I have GoldWave, reaper and audacity.

Recently, we recorded some massive stadium chants.

Problem is, while we’re almost certain the chant contains eternal wisdom, we can’t decipher it, and it’s driving us insane.

We’ve passed it around to colleagues, friends, family, and the HR department (our office plant), with no luck.

Yell your best guess out loud or comment below: what should we name the file?

My tape player died before getting to the end of the last album, so while it's recharging I'm checking out other stuff on the label's Bandcamp. #NowPlaying an experimental project from Pakistani-French musician Ambroise Yon, might have to get this one on cassette too. Really beautiful collage of sounds.
