💻🦊 ICYMI – Já ouviste falar do LibreWolf?

Firefox is dead to me • The Register

No notes. All good points. I'm still not going to a Chrome based browser. Not yet.
I hear Opera is nice if that day ever comes.

Main points:

  • Shitty removal of promise to never sell your data from the FAQ.
  • Hard pivot to AI that nobody wants.
  • Killing programs people actually like and use.
  • Losing on performance (again).
  • Mass layoffs.

As is pointed out in the article, most of the crap comes directly from Mozilla and management, not the people doing development.
It could be righted with a massive leadership change that isn't going to happen.

I've switched to IronFox on my phone and LibreWolf on my laptops. I'll keep doing that as long as it's feasible.

I have to use Edge and Firefox at work because they are "approved" (along with Chrome) and centrally managed.

Edit: fixed a typo.

Mastodon, I have a problem:

I'm using #Librewolf and I can't play any videos from any website. GIFs are ok, but videos… I press play and the image stays frozen.

Has this happened to anyone? Should I enable/disable anything in the browser settings?

Thanks!

PS: #LibrewolfOnMac

I've been using Tridactyl[1] for a long time now for keyboard-driven vi bindings in the browser and yesterday decided to check out the alternatives, thinking maybe they provided some interesting features too.

I looked them all up: Vimium, Vimium C, Vimmatic, SurfingKeys and the result is: I am in awe of how advanced Tridactyl is in comparison to all of them.

Native messaging*, comprehensive ex command mode for commands and settings with live-previewed completions; hint-based visual selection, copying and focus; support for local filesystem text-based configuration; binding sequential browser actions to custom commands; tab group commands; actually launching (neo)vim to edit text areas; ...to name a few!

* do bear in mind the security implications of native messaging, as noted by the developers themselves, but you can have most of the functionality without it

I've stopped using Firefox since the drama a while back... Using #ZenBrowser and #LibreWolf mainly on macOS and on #Android, #Ironfox and #Cromite (as an alt browser). But I'm having quite a lot of website functionality problems when using Ironfox. Can't create accounts, forms not working, can't use #webauthn, pages not loading correctly, checkouts or shopping sites broken, etc. I guess I need to have #Firefox still installed... It's annoying. What's your workaround? #browsers #androidbrowser

This is so cool!

I just discovered uBlockOrigin, (automatically included with Librewolf) has an element zapper!

Now I can carry out my dream of erasing tRump & fElon's puke-inducing faces on the news sites that keep on pasting those vile things front and center.

Thanks #Librewolf #uBlockOrigin!

For the last few years I've been really disappointed with #Mozilla making dumb choices and just generally screwing everything up.

My first response was to move to #Librewolf, which is excellent and unscrews a lot that firefox screws up, but it felt like a token gesture so I've had my eyes open for a true alternative.

I dug around in the #Debian packages and came up with #Falkon, which has a great license and is well maintained, so I figured I'd take it for a spin.

So far, I really like it!

@nixCraft Wow so many replies! Common opinion: #LibreWolf it is.

So I installed (using #homebrew no less), got bitten by the not notarized issue, knew how to work around it.

Preliminary conclusion: installation is absolutely impossible for normies (homebrew? Extra flags?)

Highest risk of all: as they tap into the stable #Firefox source code they depend for 100% on Firefox, hence Mozilla, to survive. So... 🤞 hey, they ditched Pocket and some other ridiculous service, there is hope!
