This video has a mixed message as far as solutions go...
it offers NO solution at how the electricity power is generated. By BURNING waste and/or biomatter.
It does offer a solution as far as the generated energy is used twice; 1 Electricity and 2 Heatstorage.
And I hope I don't have to explain the benefits of #DistrictHeating but there are better solutions, cold-water-storage [40 °C - 70 °C]

"Why a city in Sweden filled these caves with almost boiling water" [12:12 min]

Somewhere below the Swedish city of Västerås, there's a big man-made cave. During the Cold War, it was used to store oil. But the local energy company decided to clean it, pump it full of water and heat it up. Here's why they did that."

**World’s largest CO2-based seawater heat pump goes online**

This heat pump itself, and the system it is part of (e.g. e-boiler) is responsive to the electricity system: on a huge scale what many ‘small’ residential heat pumps can also do: adjust consumption (very quickly for frequency regulation, or longer in time to match renewable electricity generation)

pv magazine InternationalWorld’s largest CO2-based seawater heat pump goes onlineGerman engine manufacturer MAN Energy Solutions’ CO2-based seawater heat pump, located in the Danish port city of Esbjerg, has started operation. The facility, with a total heating capacity of 70 MW, will provide climate-neutral heat to Esbjerg and neighbouring town Varde.

Many cities might even do without #HeatPumps for heating, as #geothermal resources like the #Molassebecken in Southern Germany provide valuable #hydrothermal temperatures above 70°C-100°C at moderate drilling depths.

"World's largest heat pump" is a 🇫🇮 lämpöpumppu (the only Finnish word I know, don't ask)

And in the competition for largest heat pumps, it is a bit like the Olympics: with many subcategories (heat source), there are many winners.

Here: air-to-water 🥇

and it's not [only] by hitting the resources jackpot. It's by making the right policy choices early.

Still tough targets: #Agriculture and #Transport
Setting a tough target gave citizens and businesses a strong belief that it is actually going to continue to happen.

If you're looking for a climate success story, you'll find it, of course, in Scandinavia. Sweden has cut 80% of its net emissions since 1990 – while growing its economy. How have they done it? And can this be a blueprint for other countries?"

Good article on how large-scale heat pumps are revolutionising heating in German cities - using the Kiel Fjord, the Rhine or Berlin's (or the small city of Lemgo's) sewage as a heat source to feed into the district heating system.

After some electricity price shocks, spot prices in #Finland are again close to zero as #WindPower exceeds 6 GW for the first time and domestic generation (13GW) exceeds consumption (11.2GW)

What to do with all this cheap electricity, since large batteries and electrolysers are not yet available?

Use #ElectricBoiler to produce heat and store it cheaply in hot water tanks. 1,5 GW of large electric boilers for #DistrictHeating will come online 2024-2025.

Want to know more? On 5 December, @semoxenaar will present how district heating can be clean, efficient and smart in this Euroheat & Power webinar:

#districtheating

ZoomWelcome! You are invited to join a webinar: Heat on, CO2 emissions down: a collective approach to heating & cooling decarbonisation. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.District heating and cooling (DHC) networks can harness vast amounts of local waste, ambient and renewable heat, whilst providing the energy system much-needed flexibility and storage. They can help achieve EU climate and renewable energy goals, unlocking the decarbonisation of the heating and cooling sector. A recent study finds that expanding DHC to cover 20% of the EU heat demand by 2030 (compared to 13% today) would save 24 billion cubic metres of gas. Existing district heating systems are transitioning to 100% renewables and waste heat supply – from currently 40% of the mix – and will be fully decarbonised by 2050. They are an efficient and viable solution to transition cities, districts and buildings which currently use natural gas boilers or coal stoves to clean heating and cooling. This webinar will bring policy experts together to discuss how policy makers can effectively roll out clean heating and cooling. Euroheat & Power (EHP), the European trade association for sustainable district heating and cooling, will present the findings of a recent study by Aalborg University on redesigning Europe's energy infrastructure, emphasising the expansion of district heating as a strategic move to eliminate gas-based heating in buildings. EHP will also present policy recommendations to expedite the transition, in view of the implementation of the Fit for 55 package and the next political mandate. The Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) - a global non-profit organisation supporting policymakers and regulators in the energy transition - will present its latest study on policy principles for clean, efficient and smart district heating, providing guidance to policy makers and regulators in decarbonising district heating.

Adding thermal storage to district heating greatly improves the flexibility of the heating system - decoupling heat production from peak demand, making it easier to decarbonise, and contributing to much-needed energy system flexibility: it's one of the principles for clean, efficient and smart district heating that my @RegulatoryAssistanceProject colleagues @semoxenaar, @janrosenow and @richardlowes have written about in this new report:

You may already be ready for your second cup of coffee in the morning - and you probably get it from a thermos. The efficient principle of brewing coffee once and enjoying it for longer is also widely applicable to district heating.
