Today on ErosBlog: a 1966 magazine article on condoms. Chiefly it's about the primarily anticompetitive reasons why condoms were then mostly for sale only via drug stores and not by mail order, but there are disquisitions into (probably spurious) condom history and literary discussions of French ticklers and penis modification:

From the You-cannot-make-this-shit-up files:

Trump stopped a shipment of 50mil USD worth of condoms to Gaza. He claimed they were going to be delivered to Hamas and that Hamas would then make bombs out of them. Yes, you heard that right. One can only speculate how potent the Hamas guys are ... I digress.
Turns out the rubbery parcel was likely bound for a different Gaza, situated in Mozambique.
Not funny. Tragic IMO.

Al Jazeera · Is the US sending $50m in condoms to Gaza as Trump claims?By Al Jazeera Staff

Condoms for Gaza.

Readers added context they thought people might want to know:
This is a grant for AIDS/HIV prevention in Mozambique, a country in Africa, not Gaza. The description is for services "in Gaza and Inhambane," which are neighboring provinces in Mozambique. .. The recipient foundation provides HIV prevention services in Mozambique

In this thread alone, Esther, Tim and I have all talked about long-term consequences of #Covid — either for ourselves or for our loved ones. It's time to stop talking about three months.

Let's see what the CDC says:

cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/

"Long COVID can last weeks, months, or years after COVID-19 illness and can sometimes result in disability."

Notice: years. Not just months.

But it's not just the obvious things, like brain fog or muscle soreness:

"... people who have had COVID-19 may be more likely to develop new health conditions such as diabetes, heart conditions, blood clots, or neurological conditions"

To put that more bluntly, #Covid can cause #diabetes (but #vaccination reduces the risk):

Covid increases your short-term and long-term risk of having a heart attack:

Covid can cause short- or long-term erectile dysfunction:

Real men wear protection — and I'm not talking about #condoms.

Do you see any of this on TV or in the papers? I don't. In the early years of the pandemic, governments went all-out to beat Covid. Now, the message is that restrictions are lifted and we can all go back to normal. But the idea of a pre-pandemic normal is gaslighting, because Covid hasn't gone away. It's still here, killing and disabling people. We can't go back to 2019. But governments have decided that driving the economy is more important than people's long-term health, because the economy is what wins elections and pays for armies. And so we all flock back to the pub, and the number of people unable to work steadily rises. How quickly we forget!

#Republicans want to go after #condoms and other #contraception too. (Increased #STI risk is a feature, not a bug.)

#Authoritarians (religious and otherwise) want and "need" #sex to be gratuitously risky, so they can say, "Follow our straight-and-narrow rules; they're good for you."

(Yes, that's also tied in with their efforts to deny us #abortion care.)

Effective #BirthControl -- allowing couples (where pregnancy might happen) to enjoy sex *without* making babies -- was a public health and personal freedom triumph of the 20th century. We're not going back!
