Kevin Karhan :verified:<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@bastetfurry" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bastetfurry</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://hachyderm.io/@janet_catcus" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>janet_catcus</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@frameworkcomputer" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>frameworkcomputer</span></a></span> not to mention whilst tooling up for reinforced plastic is more expensive than CNC'ing aluminium or get that sheetmetal-pressed, the cost per unit goes down way easier as said plastic parts are less abrasive to tools and one set of shells can be used to injection-mould several thousand cases at a higher speed, reducing tge time and space needed per unit.</p><ul><li>Also mind you the replacement parts prices will OFC be higher than the cost of manufacturing, cuz every <em>"FRU"</em> or <em>"CRU"</em> on it's own generates a new SKU to inventory and manage, whereas just combining multiples to make a <em>"<a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Framework12" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Framework12</span></a>"</em> unit is not adding much.</li></ul><p>OFC I do expect this thing, which is basically a modern spin on the <em>"<a href="https://infosec.space/tags/IntelClassmate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IntelClassmate</span></a>" <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Laptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Laptop</span></a></em> to not have extreme high-end and be designed with a specific price point in mind.</p><ul><li>Propably do a rubbery keyboard and better ingress protection to make it more viable for handibg out to schoolchildren.</li></ul><p>Add to it that Framework isn't <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Quanta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Quanta</span></a>, <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Clevo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Clevo</span></a> or <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Foxconn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Foxconn</span></a> and we ain't talking <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/MacBook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MacBook</span></a> margins, but given they didn't release specs nor MSRP but are eager to get <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/bulk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bulk</span></a> orders from <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/education" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>education</span></a> customers, that seems the trajectory they're going.</p><ul><li>Shurely they could easy do a <em>"€299"</em> offering with an N100, 128GB NVMe &amp; 8GB RAM if one were to order like 10.000 and pay upfront, but I do expect them to rather go with like a N300 instead so these devices ain't dead slow and can survive 6 years of 8x5 use in an elementary/middle school setting.</li></ul>
