@muiren We watched Origins last night, excellent, just as we’d expected of Ava DuVernay, and are glad to see our local public library has Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents in multiple formats, including large print, sound recording, and book adaptation for young adults. montereylibrary.org/cgi-bin/ko

“How does caste shape our digital lives? In this episode of Caste Conversation, youth share their experiences navigating through social media: from building their online presence to confronting online discrimination, violence, and misrepresentation. They talk about the challenges marginalized communities go through in digital spaces, what triggers online caste-based abuse, and what extra barriers persons with disabilities face in accessing digital media. Watch now for thought provoking discussion on the intersections of caste and the digital divide!

What sets Caste Conversation apart?
Each episode dives into critical intersections of caste with topics like climate, justice, digital equity, and gender dynamics. Through these 12 thematic areas, we aim to foster empathy, solidarity, and collective action against caste-based discrimination, sparking a ripple effect of awareness and empowerment.”

Aristophanes, the most prominent playwright of Old Comedy, frequently targeted politicians, philosophers, and societal norms, using his plays to critique the Peloponnesian War and other political matters.

The comedies also depicted everyday life and common people, often highlighting their rise to higher status.

Listening to remarks from Vance and the id-djt I'm hearing/reading snarky references to immigrants and refugees as being sub-human, almost untouchables. Starting to wonder about the influence of #caste over their group speech. Isabel Wilkerson wrote ;
“A caste system is an artificial construction, a fixed and embedded ranking of human value that sets the presumed supremacy of one group against the presumed inferiority of other groups.” 🤔

#Watching #Origin 2024 Drama by Ava DuVernay 2hrs 20 mins

was really looking forward to seeing this — disappointed at first cos Binge had the streaming rights, but this is now for buy/ or rent from itunes australia

“While grappling with tremendous personal tragedy, Isabel sets herself on a path of global investigation and discovery. Despite the colossal scope of her project, she finds beauty and bravery while crafting one of the defining American books of our time.”
“Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Ava DuVernay, ORIGIN is inspired by the remarkable life and work of Pulitzer Prize winning author Isabel Wilkerson as she pens her seminal book, #Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents.”

the book Caste made a deep impression on me, but i had no idea just how viscerally this bio/doco/drama would bring home what #IsabelWilkerson has to say about Caste. Not surprised it’s a quality film because Ava DuVernay knows her stuff, but this exceeded my expectations, and then some.
it’s beautifully made, and very moving.
(Okay, i’m wrecked from weeping, but that’s just what i do)

#Caste - the origins of our discontents by Isabel Wilkerson

[forget the rules about not providing comments or reviews - it’s hard to choose (or praise) a book by its cover, so what would be the point?]

key points explored *race is a human construct - *definitions and consequences of race are fluid depending on social structure - * in USA race is caste

caste is not class, cos you can (theoretically, even in the face of obstacles) change your class through your actions but you cannot change your caste -

yes, this book even provides insight into why people vote trump etc

If you read this book, you will see the underlying power structure everywhere you go. You will also see why the hard right wing conservatives are working long and hard to undermine every bit of the rights that have been hard won for immigrants, POC and women over our lifetimes. Did I mention I recommend this book. The world could be a better place if more people read it and became aware of and changed this caste system in America.
