Had a sobering conversation with Mrs G today, and I am realising more and more that I am becoming a depressed, phone addicted zombie. There are a few things I need to change, and one of those things is how I use my devices and why.
It also makes me realise how deeply psychological, phone use has become. Not just in dependency on the dopamine hits, but how developers utilise basic tricks to lure us in.
The app icons are bright and colourful, like a sweet or something fun and tasty. The trick is that we are drawn to that fun colourful button as you know you will get a hit if you press it. How to combat it? Some phones have a 'greyscale' option in the Accessibility menu. Change your phone to grey scale, and it takes away the 'fun' part so makes it less appealing.
It's easy to press a button and receive a reward in the form of dopamine, the ease of access means users can access an algorithm fuelled timeline in a matter of seconds. Putting an obstacle in front of this ease of access means it becomes less appealing to want to access social media. Especially if you have 2FA set up.
To quote Atomic Habits "It's not about making good habits easier, but bad habits harder"
The result is that I've uninstalled Facebook and Twitter. If I really want to get on, I need to work for it. My phone is in greyscale mode, and I can already feel the difference.
Hoping a small change will make a big difference. #digitaldetox #atomichabits #makeachange
