at age 14 James needed a massive blood transfusion after major chest surgery

you might think "that's why he became a lifelong donor"

and you are correct, he pledged to do so after the surgery

but, in something that sounds more like cosmic karma than just science:

it is theorized the blood transfusions he received at age 14 is what made his body produce such abnormally high levels of Anti-D

it's literally a #superhero origin story, no gamma rays or radioactive spiders needed

James Harrison looks at 8-month-old Layla and her mother, Beth Ismay, in Sydney, Australia, in May 2018. It was the last time Harrison donated blood. "I am here to say thank-you to James," says Beth Ismay, a 33-year-old mother of two, at the center with her seven-weeks-old daughter, Layla. "I received four Anti-D injections while I was pregnant with Layla. I know his blood donation played a very big part in keeping my daughter safe," she told dpa, describing Harrison as "a miracle man." She has a negative blood type, while her partner and Layla both have a positive blood type. "Layla would have been in danger. I would have been in danger of having a miscarriage if it wasn't for his plasma," Ismay says. Ismay had also received Anti-D injections during the birth of her first child, who is now "four-and-a-half and healthy and thriving."
