Trans identity vent thread

A common phrase we often hear in discussions around gender identity and transness is ‘Identifying As’ a Woman/a Man/Non-Binary ect.
As a trans person the use of this phrase kind of irks me somewhat. I don’t know about anyone else but I’ve found that I most often hear this phrase used by cis people, most often self-proclaimed ‘allies’ when talking about or even advocating for the validity of trans people.
I can’t help but wonder what meaning people derive when they use or - perhaps more importantly from an optics point of view - hear the phrase ‘Identifies as …’.
Because what I hear when people say ‘someone who identifies as a woman’ is ‘someone who wants to be seen as a woman’.
It reduces it down to identity in the outward sense, the performative sense.
