#TodayILearned that "Mogwai" from the movie #Gremlins derived from the Chinese 貓怪 (Māo guài) meaning "cat monster".
I'm just over here prepping my lecture slides for our discussion of Modernity
TIL #Gremlins was originally written as an R-rated film.
Spielberg convinced the writer to tone it down to fit into a PG rating (since PG-13 didn’t exist yet, and Gremlins was one of the catalysts that created it).

So my Xmas begins
Xmas eve tradition for as long as I've owned the movie, first on VHS, then on DVD and now for the first time... in 4K
Gremlins has been my goto xmas eve tradition for more than 30yrs now... sure there have been gaps where I didn't have a copy available, I was away for example.
Later, if I have time... I added Scrooged to the xmas eve list about 10yrs ago.
On xmas day... it has to be Die hard of course.
If I'm lucky... I might even squeeze in A Muppet Christmas Carol over the next couple of days.
Among the annual discussion of whether #DieHard is a #XmasMovie (it definitely is!!), don't forget about #Gremlins !!
Then a friend shared this article that explores the history how #Gremlins and #IndianaJones (both 1984 Speilberg films) helped usher in the PG-13 rating and, arguably, changed American cinema for the worse.
TL;DR of the argument: PG-13 ultimately backfired. Instead of being a warning about violence and to keep kids away, it normalized that violence and pushed sex and other content into a more taboo space.

Totally out of place Easter egg in #Gremlins around the 42:30 mark: Husband calls home to say he has to work on Christmas at an inventor’s convention.
First shot: In the bkg is a time machine from IIRC the film adaptation of Jules Verne’s book. Camera cuts to the Gremlins hatching in the attack.
Second shot of husband: The Time Machine has disappeared.
It’s like a gag from The Simpsons or Family Guy.
Also: I forgot how violent this film is! And mom is surprisingly (for the time) a badass.
Jessi just put on #Gremlins and we are rediscovering the wild tonal whiplash of this film. It reminded me of a similar aspect to Michael Bay’s #Transformers3, of all things.
Which, yes, I do have a soft spot for. And so does this #YouTube essayist I enjoy, PointlessHub, if you are so curious.
Like, Transformers get executed, a couple by *beheading* in that film. Whole groups of humans get vaporized. He argues it might be the most violent PG-13 film he can think of.
Yanno, not too very handy when ya get to work first thing on a Monday.

Finally found a way to capture the Game Boy screen properly with decent natural lighting.
