Reason #27 why #FordMustGo

This is an excellent investigative report on Doug Ford and the #GreenbeltScandal. The back room dealing is blatant with obvious insider information being provided for the benefit of a few privileged developers. Ford didn't reverse course because of public outcry - he backed down because he was being investigated by the RCMP. Public opinion means nothing but jail time is a real motivator.

The Narwhal · The year of the Greenbelt: how Doug Ford’s bid to build housing on protected land backfiredBy Emma McIntosh

Reason #26 why #FordMustGo

A leaked video in 2018 showed Ford telling a room of developers that he'd “open a big chunk” of the Greenbelt. After that was revealed, Ford pivoted and made an unequivocal promise: “We won’t touch the Greenbelt.” In 2022 Ford started to open big chunks of the Greenbelt, defending it as necessary for housing and that the protected lands were a big scam & a failed policy.

Global News · What did Doug Ford say about the Greenbelt? A timeline of the premier’s promisesBy Isaac Callan

In #OnPoli, Ford government rams through omnibus bill with legislation in it that reduces oversight on “simple infrastructure projects” like the environmentally disastrous #BradfordBypass and the costly and embattled #Hwy413. Opposition is alarmed based on gov’s track record of cronyism and environmental mismanagement with the #greenbeltscandal. Less oversight seems the opposite of what is needed to protect biodiversity and prevent wasteful 1950s-style #urbanSprawl. thestar.com/politics/provincia

Toronto StarFord government wants to fast-track construction projects but critics warn Greenbelt shows it can't be trustedThe Progressive Conservatives insist streamlining approvals for more infrastructure projects will not be harmful to the environment.

The Ford government has apologized to the developers caught up in the #Greenbeltscandal. 👀

"Let me start by saying I'm very sorry. I do truly understand how difficult the last few months have been for each and every one of you in the room," said MPP Calandra.

#Ontario is waiting for an apology for:
Closed ER's
Lack of family doctors
Senior Covid deaths in LTC
Autistic kids programming cuts
Lousy school pandemic policies
And on and on..

Tx. Good read! - #greenbeltscandal

"There’s the small matter of the RCMP investigation..a ticking bomb that could plausibly detonate at any time between now and the 2026 election."
"There’s the stubborn fact that #Ontario is still facing a housing crisis... and local leaders are rapidly running out of patience with Queen’s Park as #DougFord seems to be more interested in name-calling than in addressing real municipal concerns."

MPP Kinga Surma says this "centralization" would "create opportunities" & allow them to "better manage & oversee real estate efficiently"

🥴 The McMichael Canadian Art gallery currently sits on 100 acres of forested land in the Humber River valley in Vaughan.
In 1965, the McMichael family formally reached an agreement to donate their collection and their entire property to the Government of #Ontario in order to establish an art museum.

As the RCMP investigates their $8.28-billion #Greenbeltscandal, Premier Ford’s Conservative govt has tabled a law cancelling their controversial municipal boundary changes.

👉 "another example of the Ford government pretending to do something by tabling a law to stop themselves from doing the thing that they already did and got caught for. Not real leadership or accountability and Ontario deserves better. - Nate Erskine-Smith

Several #Ontario municipalities have turned down #DougFord's offer of strong-mayor powers because of his unrealistic housing targets or worries that the these powers would tie themselves to a "dictatorship."

Newmarket was the first to refuse, telling the province there was no way the town could build 12,000 homes in 10 years because the municipality doesn't currently have the sewage capacity to serve more than a couple thousand more homes.

The Trillium has new reporting on:

  • developers paying $1,000-a-plate for a Sylvia Jones fundraiser

  • "should not proceed" recommendations being overturned for party donors

  • plans for #Highway413 being used to support rezoning orders, including one for 200 hectares of "prime agricultural" land

The Trillium · Ford government rezoned land after developer donations, despite ministry pushbackBy Jack Hauen

@ryan2on
A choice related to the #greenbeltscandal..

Premier Ford purposely waived a $1B penalty owed by the 407 ETR owners rather than negotiate lower 407 ETR tolls that would ease congestion on Hwy 401.

Had the 407 tolls been reduced, #DougFord’s 'donor-friendly' Hwy 413 would not be justified.

👉 "this province's determination to build the 413 has blinded it to using the 407 to solve traffic congestion on the 401”

An analysis of minister’s zoning orders [MZO] issued by the #DougFord government during its first two full years shows some puzzling patterns...

"No one in the industry really thinks [MZO] zoning orders would actually speed up [development],” said Marty Stollar, former mayor of Lindsay, “these gratuitous MZOs literally do nothing to speed up development... and are simply a tool to increase the value of the land."

UPDATE: #Greenbeltscandal land developer Sergio Manchia has been charged under the Municipal Elections Act for allegedly donating more money than the legal limit to #Hamilton city council candidates.

Just last week...
"Not only did #DougFord meet privately with developer Sergio Manchia to discuss the removal of his lands from the Greenbelt, this meeting (which the Premier says he doesn't remember) took place at a $1,200-a-ticket Conservative fundraiser held at the developer's house."
#onpoli

Premier Ford may look contrite & promise he's reversing the #Greenbeltscandal lands, but note he's not reversing his biggest gift to developers - #Bill23 - which offloads infrastructure costs onto municipalities.

For example, #Guelph is projecting a loss of $227 million in development charges as a result of the #DougFord govt's #Bill23 legislation passed last year.

👉 Guelph taxpayers now have pay 35% more in property tax between now and 2027.
