Anyone happen to know if a TWSBI diamond 580 ALR can fill directly from a TWSBI 18ml bottle (without the snorkel)?

I don't have any TWSBI ink to check. I know the Diamine 18ml bottles are too narrow.

Was eyeing an ink sample pack as part of a gift for someone but it would be silly if the pen couldn't fill from the ink.

Brandy led to this enlightening discussion; https://bsky.app/profile/ellyrieve-lvk.co.uk/post/3lkjpflvxzs2w , which eventually prompted this Fabio style fan art of Elliot. The idea just would not leave me alone otherwise.

Don't drink and look for art references at the same time lol.

Materials;
Two Pentel brush pens eyedropper-ed with Diamine Inks.
Tintoretto synthetic mop 1407 brush 5/0
Strathmore Bristol 400 series 9x12

Inks;
Diamine Aurora Borealis
Diamine (Cult exclusive) Sand between your toes
Diamine (Cult exclusive) Lime Ice lolly
Diamine Pumpkin
Diamine (Cult exclusive) Summer Sunset
Diamine Oxblood.

Got tired of ink sample vials falling over every time I reached for ink, so I printed a sample vial rack.

Not completely happy with it, though. Lots of stringing on the legs and they wobbled a bit as it printed the upper parts. I'm fairly certain it's the model or the print orientation (standing). It doesn't need to be pretty, though, just functional, and it's fine. Fits where I needed it to go, too. If this breaks I'll find a better one.

I missed getting a slot for the Sailor Ink Blending this year at the Manila Pen Show 2025, but was put on a waiting list. I have been searching for a color I wanted to create/recreate, and I chose a purple close to Lamy Dark Lilac but not exactly the same (I do not want sheen, just a rich purple). So I have found a couple of image pegs below. I will call the ink Hanashobu, after the Japanese iris.

Companies are making it easy for me to not buy things lately.

Endless Stationery announced a new ink "Mocha Mousse", which is a medium shading brown and it looks great in their photos. But it's coffee scented, so that's a pass.

I'd have to try a sample first to make sure the scent isn't problematic for me, and to check that it isn't too watery. I'll just stick to non-scented inks. Their Molten Bronze looks promising, though.

What is disappearance? In short, it is a repressive tactic used by authoritarian states to terrorize the civilian population into submission.

While the term “the disappeared” emerges in the aftermath of authoritarianism in Guatemala (1966) and Operation Condor in South America (perhaps most famously General Pinochet and his reign of terror in Chilean, but also juntas across South America including in Argentina), it describes a tactic that has long been in use and continues to be used by authoritarian regimes across the world, so it’s a concept to be aware of and understand.

Disappearance is characterized by illegal abduction, secret detention centers, torture, death, and unofficial burial.

Disappearance was, in theory, a way to avoid responsibility. The state maintained plausible deniability while effectively terrorizing their citizens into submission. The message is clear, you could be next.

QOTD: Have you heard of disappearing?

Something that I really love doing that combines my love of reading and study with my love of stationery, pens, and ink, is copying out striking quotes from novels that I’m reading.

I’ve always done this a little bit for my research, but it really reached a new level of just being something I do to engage with texts in a different way during the pandemic when I decided to read The Tale of Genji.

Writing down lines that stood out to me provided a way to both document my reading experience and also let the style of the translation get into my body in a different way than the purely visual act of reading.

Now I often recommend to people, if they’re looking for a simple step they can take to deepen their reading experience, try marking the passages that stand out to you, whether that’s with sticky tabs, a highlighter, or writing them in a quotes notebook.

Over time you’ll begin to notice themes emerge in what draws your attention. And you get the pleasure of just spending a little extra time with lines that you love.

I think it’s a nice, low pressure way to get a little more studious with what you’re reading while taking away the pressure of trying to identify what is important or what an expert would pay attention to.

QOTD: do you mark up your books or find external ways of tracking the parts that interest you?

Finally got around to swatching ON Inks Black Tulip. ON Inks is a Filipino ink maker, and this is from their newly released color series. Black Tulip is a very dark purple. It can pass as black, but is very clearly purple in a brighter light. I have only tried it with a fine-nibbed Kaweco Piston Filler, so there is a little discernible shading. Flow is quite good, but does not change the writing width. Good for business and other purposes. I really like it.

ON Inks (a Philippine inkmaker) released four new colors today. I ordered a 50ml of the Black Tulip, may get Midnight Forest in 20ml later. City Fog is a grey, but I already have their Umang (Hermit Crab grey) so am not getting that one. Will see them next at the Manila Pen Show 2025!
