oh boy. i just found my academic records published on my old CS department's server
back in 1997 when i was a snot nosed first year university student, i was planning on becoming a CS student.
the first requirement of the degree was CMPUT 114: Introduction to Computer Science.
the course was pretty straightforward: learn how to code and solve problems with Turbo Pascal 7 in a lab, while learning about data structures and bubble search and encapsulation in class.
unfortunately, that same semester, Ultima Online launched. 12 of my 14 hours a day were spent playing UO, leaving a few minutes for completing assignments.
i have circled the assignments i missed, and final exam which i did not study for because i was trying to GM my swordsman in UO
congrats to @raphkoster on the Stars Reach announce. a game of this particular style has been long overdue in the mmo world
some of us UO pre-alpha and beta players still are chasing that kind of interactive density after getting a taste nearly 30 years ago.

this past week was the 27th anniversary of the ultima online (phase 1) beta test
i'd like to remind everyone that comic sans ms was the default font for the uo.com site for over a decade
some fun obscure friday ultima history
in the autumn of 1997, if you ordered Ultima Online directly from the origin/ea store, your boxed copy would arrive with a cloth map and this pewter pin
i always liked this ornate, unique design for the uo logo.
People just figuring out that Villain-Con is closed for HHN.
Anyone stop to think about the logistical nightmare of getting drunks to step onto a moving walkway and stand there for 4 mins?
back in '03 i spent two weeks in urban japan, exploring its many train stations and alleys
imagine my shock at finding not only an #Ultima Online ad on a billboard, but an ad *showing it running on a flip phone five years after I had stopped playing it*
i was always mystified by the billboard, and thought about it on and off for 20 years
i was finally able to track down the story behind the ad. it turned out to be a real game, but *not* #UO was we know it.
Ultima Online Mobile Edition was a completely different final fantasy-style pixel art combat game for the NTT DoCoMo network. it even had a monster/pet breeding minigame.
sadly, the game is lost to time - the game was only playable on a handful of japanese handsets, and no one ever thought to dump it before it disappeared.
what little information we have about it linked below. thank you to @bombbloke for their help in tracking this all down:
Oregon State U (#OSU) has decided not to renews its #Elsevier subscriptions and just sent a letter to its community explaining why.

The letter adds that U of Oregon (#UO) and Portland State U (#PSU) are taking similar action.
