“The Tulsa race massacre stands out as a civil rights crime unique in its magnitude, barbarity, racist hostility and its utter annihilation of a thriving Black community,” Kristen Clarke, the assistant attorney general of the DoJ’s civil rights division, said in a statement. “In 1921, white Tulsans murdered hundreds of residents of Greenwood, burned their homes and churches, looted their belongings, and locked the survivors in internment camps.”

Bynum, who will select the cmte members, has previously demurred on the idea of financial #reparations.

In 2020, he told #Tulsa-based TV station that distributing cash payments “divides the community on something that we really need to be united around.” Debate over compensation led to the cancellation of an event commemorating the bloodshed the next year.

On Thurs, Bynum said he wants the cmte to explore types of reparations beyond cash payments.

actionnetwork.orgWe don’t want the Oklahoma State Court System to dismiss us again—sign our letter in support of these families finally having their day in court! More than 100 years have passed since local and state-level officials and private white Tulsans committed the devastating acts of violence upon the Black community of Greenwood during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre—75 of those years, the City of Tulsa and other responsible parties worked diligently to hide the egregious and traumatic events that took place on that day. May 31-June 1, 1921 became the bedrock from which violence, pain, and trauma reverberated into present-day North Tulsa, continuing to impact the lives of Black Tulsans, and Survivors and Descendants who have continuously fought for justice. In 2003, more than 200 Survivors and Descendants filed a federal lawsuit seeking reparations and redress for the Massacre and its continuing harms. The court ultimately dismissed their case on the grounds that the statute of limitations had run out. To this day, Survivors and Descendants who continue to live with the ongoing trauma caused by the Massacre have never gotten to have their day in court. That was until we met supporters like you—together, along with our Greenwood Plan, we have the ability to change the trajectory of this history, and our future-forward for our families, Black Tulsans, and Black people across the nation. But it starts here first. It’s been over a decade since our first trial—we want to continue the pursuit of justice that's been sought after by Survivors and Descendants of the Massacre for the last 101 years. Stand with Tulsa Massacre Survivors and descendants—sign our letter in support of these families finally having their day in court!

Bruner, spoke to The Root about why his experiences are so significant and his death, so devastating. There are now just two living survivors of the massacre — Van Ellis' sisters Viola Ford Fletcher (109) and Lessie Benningfield Randle (108).
