After #Germany was defeated, the #UnitedStates still needed the help of #Soviets to fight #Japan in the East, as discussed at #Yalta in Crimea.

It was only later that the development of Atomic Bomb allowed #Truman to give a unilateral ultimatum to #Japan at #Potsdam in occupied Germany, while USSR was still neutral

Many African leaders, #SouthAfricas included, had deep ties with the #SovietUnion during the late 20th C. During their time as a revolutionary party in exile, the #Soviets helped back the #africannationalcongress who went on to rule S. Africa for the past 30 years.
