Mysterious pre-Islamic script from Oman finally deciphered
https://www.science.org/content/article/mysterious-pre-islamic-script-oman-finally-deciphered
Made a pass on this script, and see where I have two scenes/sequences still to write. But really liked reading it after a long time away from it. I needed that today.
Before I write one for myself[0], is there an existing utility that takes an input (file or stdin) and when there are consecutive repeated lines outputs exactly N of them?
For N=1 we have "uniq" ... do we have a utility for N other than 1?
[0] Though I probably will anyway.
In the early 2000s, I wrote a script for 3ds Max to automate tasks of the V-Ray renderer. Very imaginatively, I named it The V-Ray Automator.
It was covered as one of the 100 best MaxScripts in the French Pixel magazine.
Hello #sci_fi fans.
I was re-thinking about the companion droid of Maarva, the mother of Cassian #Andor.
Do you know a #droid or non-human character, especially in the Star Wars mythology, that is dubbed by SOMETHING ELSE than a white guy ?
(Jar-Jar Binks... is not a droid.)
I bet 95% of these characters are male-gendered written, and male acted/dubbed.
Weekend goal: a #Lua chunk (script) to help sighted users review #Braille. It's a great way to understand how visually impaired users interact with a computer using a screen reader and a Braille display. The script is simple and easy to configure. Currently, it offers a learning mode; in the future, a challenge mode will be added, along with a blog post explaining how to set it up.

On #FreeBSD it should be executable via flua:
% flua learnbraille.lua
after installing liblouis:
# pkg install liblouis
[edit] % /usr/libexec/flua learnbraille.lua
Bulgarians pay tribute to Cyrillic script forefathers on St Cyril and Methodius Day.
Hundreds of people gathered in the Bulgarian capital on Saturday to lay flowers at the base of the statue of Orthodox Church saints St Cyril and Methodius in central Sofia.
St Cyril and Methodius were the creators of the Glagolitic script, which later evolved into the Cyrillic alphabet.

I was just thinking, how do #Youtuber #upload their #videos to #YouTube right now? Are their any open source #YT #uploaders? If so, how do we get #Peertube support in them to allow people to do an upload once and it go to multiple places? That way we lower the bar to entry of Peertube, while having a direct onboarding and exposure to the #Fediverse.

#TimeTravelTuesday #ThoughtExperiment: Many #Worldlets?
or in other words, fractions of #World, not the whole World. #TimeTraveler #theories often involve splitting or multiplying #universes. Time Travel events divide #spacetime into two near-identical clones. Grandfather lived or did not, you did not meet yourself or you did. But if we think this through further, its scope might not be quite so universal as typically presented.
Take 3 heavenly bodies: Mother #Earth, the #AlphaCentauri triple star system (at 4+ light years away), and #Polaris, the #NorthStar (at 400+ light years away).
Now we program our #TimeMachine to take us back one year (#retrograde) where we meet ourselves. Hi selves! This all takes place in one year. There's the original us, there's us leaving the present, and there's us meeting our past/original selves a year earlier — standard #boilerplate #scifi #movie #script.
Alpha Centauri will have to wait another 3 years before any of this information can get to there. This is related to the concept of a #lightcone which expands at the speed of light. This doesn't sound quite so much like birthing a twin universe, does it? Now what about the North Star? It will have to wait 433 years for news of our Time Travel event(s). And that's still pretty much in our tiny #celestial neighborhood.
The point is that the effects of such events are largely localized and rapidly diluted as we move farther away. This still has its paradoxical problems, but it doesn't quite feel like the whole universe dividing into two — maybe part of it (a universelet? a subuniverse?) Possibilities are that in moving further out in space-time, the effects of a Time Travel incident may be 'blurred out', as are anomalous numerical samples in the law of large #numbers. If one pours a cup of coffee into a lake, it doesn't change the color of the lake. There is a brief chaotic #glitch before it is no longer measurable.
It is tempting to imagine space-time as "stitching" itself back together. (Glitch & stitch?) Such speculations are related to #StephenHawking's "chronology protection conjecture" of 1992. And along with #blackholes, #entanglement, and other #quantum phenomena, if Time Travel is possible, then we should be looking for it at every scale. We could be surrounded by time-traveling particles everywhere all the #Time.

Lois Weber: More than a Writer-Director She’s the Auteur Activist of Early Cinema – Dr. Rosanne Welch, Script Magazine, April 2025
Film studies courses often still fawn all over Cecil B. DeMille and D.W. Griffith. Rather than wallowing in the racist messages of Birth of a Nation, professors should focus on the work of Lois Weber, whose use of screenwriting in her activism lends continued relevance to her work. In an era where we bask in the social justice messages of Get Out, by writer-director Jordan Peele, it seems only right to connect the dots from Weber to Peele. So, to celebrate this 50th column, we’re celebrating Weber.

If your TV show or movie has a character say, “keep your phone on and charged,” but earlier you had a character find a bunch of cell phones hidden long-term in a hidden wall compartment they could turn on and they’re charged, you broke your world.
Either phones need charge or they don’t.
