Following on from the post about banking in #ancient #Rome, I thought I'd share this piece. A Denarius was the standard day's wage for a labourer in Ancient Rome. This one is interesting as it is not all that it seems. It is a "Fouree", an ancient counterfeit coin made of copper and plated with silver. https://coinofnote.com/19-b-c-rome-augustus-denarius-fouree/

Collecting #AncientCoins, particularly those from Rome is popular. But how much do you know about the #Roman #banking system? Invicta has you covered with this 19 minute video on the banking system in #Ancient #Rome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw-TszklK-g (Not much mention of specific coins, but an interesting discussion on how it worked)

.......Donald White's article from a 1986 edition of Penn Museum's "Expedition Magazine" :
https://www.penn.museum/documents/publications/expedition/28-3/The%20Morris.pdf
John T Morris, the 1916 donor of the Morris Coin, was heir to the Morris Iron Works, established in Philadelphia in 1828. He might be seen as personifying his era's combination of capitalist exploitation and high culture philanthropy. This problematic combination, not unique to the USA but of singular importance in that country's history, merits consideration not only as exemplifying the golden leash that has both facilitated and bound the arts and scholarship in the USA, but also as a contrast to....

The stories behind the coins are what really bring them to life. While I don't have any coins of Mexican Emperor Maximilian I, but knowing his story, certainly brings life into those coins (I mean, not to him of course, his life as #Emperor of #Mexico was short lived :) )

Why do medieval coins look simpler than ancient coins? It's not just that the Roman Empire had fallen and it took a thousand years to get back to the same level of technology, as we often hear. Classical Numismatics dives into it and explains: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vj_13kelQWE

... the defeat of the US military assault on the Canadas is seen as an important stage in the development of a distinct Canadian identity. Note how the 200th Anniversary Royal Canadian Mint silver dollar features a British sergeant, a Voltigeur Canadien, and an Iroquois warrior.
Is there a source for these words ascribed to the 13 year old Jacob Cline?
>>The Americans were in high spirits, and when I said I was Canadian, one of the officers laughed and said, "You’ll soon be under the Yankey government, my boy." I was sassy, like most boys of my age, and I said, "I’m not so sure about that." <<
A new coin was recently discovered that is thought to be the oldest known Anglo-Saxon coin. The "massively significant" find that was struck in the 7th Century. The design depicts a man dancing a jig while holding a Christian cross above a symbol linked to the Norse god Odin.

Students at King's College London are learning how Roman coins were made, including the "significant disparity in portrait styles in Roman provincial coinage for which there is no good explanation" - how? By learning how dies are made and by practising striking coins themselves - it sounds a fascinating course!

We pause today, the 6th of June, to remember D Day. 81 years ago, the largest amphibian invasion in the history of warfare occurred. Over 5,000 ships and craft landed more than 150,000 allied troops which ultimately led to the defeat of Nazi Germany.
