"According to a statement from the Indigenous and Popular Student Front of Michoacán, on Wednesday night, around 7:30 pm, state police repressed a group of students who were demonstrating near the monument to Lázaro Cárdenas in Morelia. The young people were beaten and twelve were detained after expressing solidarity with fellow students from the Tiripetío Normal School, who had also allegedly suffered previous aggressions."

Despite attempts by local authorities to impede the vote, in a general assembly yesterday, the P’urhépecha community of Tacuro, Michoacán, voted 307 to 0 for autonomy: to directly administer their own resources, make decisions according to traditional forms of governance without political parties, and to self-govern.

"Human rights organizations condemned forced displacements, blockades of roads and access to communities, shootings against the civilian population and direct threats perpetrated by organized crime groups against the inhabitants of Coahuayula, in the Sierra Costa of Michoacán.

"They indicated that the documented aggressions include material damage to homes, schools, the health center and other community spaces, as well as shots fired at people trying to travel along the blocked roads and accesses to the communities in the region."

"Before Indigenous self-government, there was no public discussion in La Cantera about how to end violence against women, reduce economic inequality or lighten the burden of women’s domestic labor. Municipal police tended to be authoritarian and violent; mistreatment and corruption were commonplace.

"Instead of continuing to put up with police behaviors organized around violating and stigmatizing racialized bodies, the Kuaricha changed the security strategy and now focus on care and the defense of communally held territory and goods."

In an assembly last Friday, the Indigenous Purépecha community of San Ángel Zurumucapio, Michoacán, decided to take up arms to defend themselves against organized crime, stating the federal, state, and local governments have failed to provide protection. They have installed armed barricades at the entrances and exits of the community.

“The Indigenous community of San Ángel Zurumucapio, Michoacán, reports that as of this Friday, August 23, 2024, the entire town has risen up in arms due to the insecurity we suffer daily from organized crime, as several inhabitants have been victims of crimes such as extortion, threats, kidnapping, and murder."

#Mexican #DrugCartels are getting into the #avocado and #lime business

by Scott Simon, February 19, 2022

"Avocados are wildly important in the U.S., and most are imported from Mexico. This week, the U.S. briefly banned Mexican avocados after a U.S. inspector in the state of #Michoacan reported receiving threats. But avocados and limes have long been used by drug cartels to help finance their violent business plans."

Did #AvocadoCartels Kill the Butterfly King?

#HomeroGómezGonzález put himself between a threatened species and #Mexico’s #avocado and #timber industries. Then he disappeared.

"Gómez’s fight to preserve the forests had been tough, he’d told the international press. He said his work had been endangered by criminals, including illegal loggers and the cartel-infiltrated avocado trade. 'Gómez was probably hurting the interests of people illegally logging in the area,' Mayte Cardona, a spokeswoman for the State #HumanRights Commission of #Michoacán, told journalists shortly after his disappearance."
