An awful lot of people suffered lung damage after contracting Covid-19, so in that respect I've been pretty lucky that my lungs are in decent shape after two bouts of it. Still, long Covid continues to take its toll, and today—entirely predictably—I discovered that playing the melodica is exhausting 😁

It's going to take a fair while for me to get used to the breath control and level of exertion involved. Fun though. Muddled my way through the Wellerman shanty that everyone took a shine to during lockdown.

In an attempt to learn the basics of playing a keyboard instrument I have spent the princely sum of £14 on a plastic melodica. As you might expect, most of the options at this end of the scale are in garishly bright colours to appeal to children. Luckily, I was able to find this one which is made from a recycled 1970s bathroom suite.

My sweetie decided to learn a musical instrument and reading music and music theory — in middle age, on the if not now? plan — and chose the melodica. Short piano keyboard, brass reeds, only makes noise if you’re blowing through it, you can get lots of mouthpieces—even a trumpet mouthpiece.

This is brilliant and I want more melodica talk in my life!

I used to play harpsichord and if anyone can point me to early music with a 37 note span that would be amazing.

"Dance with Me" is a 1975 hit single by American #softRock band Orleans from their second studio album, #OrleansII (1974). Featuring a #melodica solo by #LarryHoppen, "Dance with Me" was introduced on the band's second album, Orleans II, and later included on their third album #LetThereBeMusic (1975). The song was issued as a single on July 19, 1975, to become Orleans' first #Top40 hit, peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of October 18, 1975.
