After reading this piece http://bit.ly/3ZSkPiN on Substack's attempt to become the 'next Twitter' with 'Notes', my first initial thought was just, 'Meh! No, thanks! Learned my lessons through the hard way with different #MediaTools over the last two decades'
Quite happy with the #fediverse and #Mastodon for that matter, thank you very much!
@jtonline Well, in a way, it is, matey! Everyone else from my long-standing networks (at least, vast majority) is hanging out elsewhere on any of those #MediaTools. I just couldn't bear anymore the toxicity, the stupidity, the manipulation, so I decided to go & hide over here
And, now, after several months using Mastodon, my level of tolerance for #MediaTools is literally zero. Including #LinkedIn & the virtual signalling going on in there
Note to self: You need to shake off that bad practice, acquired via #MediaTools, about posting stuff away like there’s no tomorrow.
Things are different here. In the true nature of #Microblogging & #SocialTools, the pace, the intent, the effort are all taking their own course.
Sometimes, just one idea, one thought, one invitation for a potential conversation, perhaps not even, is more than enough.
Build, nurture & sustain for the long-term… 15 / 20 years from now …
This is going to sound a bit weird, but I've just spent about 30 minutes over at Twitter, going through my Twitter Lists, no algorithms involved, and my head just went
I can no longer relate to *any* of what's been tweeted about, nor relate to the folks behind those tweets I have been following for over 16 years!
I guess my time weaning off Twitter is now complete!
P.S. Deleted my Twitter Lists from my RSS newsfeed reader. Moving on … to whatever next
@stuartmcintyre Oooh, absolutely, Stuart! Well said!
Reflecting further on it though, I am wondering whether such glorious phrase could be applied to a specific context: i.e. pioneers and that urging need to bond and belong, as social creatures we all are, during the initial path of a journey.
I suspect there is something to it along those lines, because I just don't see that kind of belonging nowadays when using (heavily mediated) #MediaTools
@jessamyn RE: 'It's a treasure' < YES!!! And, if I may add, it's a treasure we've taken for granted for far too long!
In my own case, never again. It's taken me two decades to realise about that, so not going to let that go that easily again not matter how luring or attractive #MediaTools may become, again, if at all.

If you could only read one blog post today that will have a significant impact in terms of how you'll view both relationships & friendships from here onwards, look no other piece than this one https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/everyday-chaos/202303/meeting-an-old-friend-for-the-first-time by @dweinberger featuring @judell.
'Intermittent friends bound together intimately.'
Now, *that* folks is what #SocialTools & #Web20 did to us all but #MediaTools took away just as fast!

Things that make #Mastodon special (to me): That heartwarming feeling when you fave a toot from someone in your #Mastodon network, only then to receive a lovely SMS from that same contact saying 'Hi!' and ending up in a lovely catch-up chat
Oh, gosh, I forgot when was the last time I had one of those exchanges in #MediaTools.
It must have been over a decade ago, when #SocialMedia lost the 'Social' tidbit to then just become that: Media (Unregulated)
With the recent outages happening at mastodon.social, a few folks asked me whether I'm ready to head back to #MediaTools. My answer: No, not likely!
You see? It's pretty much like when I started #NoeMail over 15 years ago: once you see the light, there's no way back!
There're far too many things I heart to bits in #Mastodon just to give it up because of an outage or two. I've learned to #JOMO while I wait for it to come back up.
I'm no longer in that frenzied hurry to try to keep up
@lee Hope other folks may join us as well, specially, since you can have up to 5 pinned toots, it doesn't harm sharing a link to the video you folks put together.
Like I said, it's just superb and worth while pinning it for others to dive into. And not only applicable to Twitter, but all other #MediaTools as well.
The music concerts analogy is just a brilliant idea!
You know, there *are* TONS of really good resources, tutorials, video explainers, tips & tricks, how tos and what not about how to make the most out of Mastodon, but this short video clip https://bit.ly/MTbyCommonCraft by the super smart Common Craft folks is just SUPERB!
Definitely, my new favourite explainer video clip of what both #Mastodon & the #fediverse are all about & why they are so much different to all #MediaTools out there

@danieldekay RE: Threading, I can relate to what you mentioned. I was hoping this particular tool https://mastodon.social/@fediversereport/109858316224793211 would help a fair bit in that regard, but I guess we'll need to wait some more, as it's just been discontinued
Interestingly enough, I'm spending way more time over here nowadays than anywhere else. Finding it extreme hard (day after day) to hang out in manipulative #MediaTools (= Walled Gardens) for the profit of a few (= Usually, one) at our own cost(s)
@jackvinson Hiya, Jack, catching up (again) with the public MT streams... That LI post pretty much confirms I am now done with sharing original content on platforms in which I am the product, for someone else's profit. No, thanks!
(After nearly 2 decades using plenty of those #MediaTools, I have learned my lesson(s) )
