#Matlab seems to be mostly recovered. Anyone installed new downloads or add-ons successfully? Anyone noticed any problems?
@mathworks - how is *downloads* not the first thing you restored? 
All the other stuff is gravy. If you have downloads, people can install their own license servers and run matlab. How is this not the first thing fixed?

@adredish I am also currently using #Matlab for my analyses.. I used to prefer #Python but last time I tried to install it to get some spike sorting code to run I had to admit that all the problems with incompatible versions made it almost not worth it.
The only other alternative I've seen people use would be R, and these people usually claim that it can do anything that Python (or Matlab) does, but in reality I've never seen them use it for anything else than plot graphs and do stats. So I don't know if it can really be a replacement.
I also tried Octave a long time ago, it was not as good as Matlab but maybe it has improved now? I don't know how they deal with updates and toolboxes..
So I'm also interested to see what alternatives do people use for #Neuroscience analyses!
Anyone knows what's going on with #Matlab and #Mathworks lately? Seems a lot of their services have been down for days now.
I'm surprised to hear they're still teaching MATLAB to civil engineering students in college. I learned MATLAB in college the late 2000s, but it was proprietary and expensive so I never used it.
STEM students should definitely be learning Python instead of MATLAB. It can do anything MATLAB can do, and is free and accessible.

Are there some general guidelines on what info to put in the comment at the top of each code file? Like date, author, basic description of what the code does? Maybe something about dependencies? Are there templates for this somewhere (e.g. for #Matlab or #Python if that matters)?
#Matlab tip when working on multiple projects:
For a long time I struggled to move from one project to another with Matlab. The "best" solution was to keep a matlab instance opened by project... Not ideal.
So I wrote a piece of code that can save or open the relevant functions & scripts associated to a given project: https://github.com/elduvelle/shared_utils
Combined with the matlab 'favorite' feature that allows you to load specific repo in the workspace & move to the project folder, I can now switch projects in the same Matlab instance in a few seconds! Feel free to use it and ask me any questions!

What a weird feeling, thinking back to my early days in #MatLab where I had very, very big functions, to the same in #RStats where restarting analyses always felt like a failure, to now having a *more* functional workflow, seeing too many items in my workspace, and restarting the console before I work on the next function.

I use python principally as an olive branch to my students. Still rocking Fortran and compiled codes (like NCO) to do most of my analyses
Python and R are mostly for plots
#RStats #ROrigin storytime: during PhD doing #bioinformatics analysis in #Matlab, kept reading papers that used @Bioconductor packages.
I wrote so much stuff in Matlab, when I started my PostDoc in 2010 I was determined to learn R and make use of actual open source software and packages.
Rewrote some of my core PhD code in R to learn the core syntax, and attended a couple of workshops.
Having access to OSS made my work so much easier.
@ricardoharvin My spouse thought she also didn't have a mind for #programming after taking #ComputerScience 100 in undergrad. It was a rough enough experience that she changed majors to #ElectricalEngineering to avoid #coding.
Just a few years later I was watching her work on #aerospace #engineering systems in #MATLAB.
I said, "I thought you didn't #code!"
She replied, "What? This is MATLAB."
Turns out she had become a professional #coder without realizing it. Just needed a passion project!
