The stock music player from #LineageOS is quite nice...

But it seems to scour your entire disk for music, rather than just /Music

No, I don't want random crap you found in /Documents to be shuffled in with the music I've curated for 20 years.

How is there not a setting for this? XD

@o_O

Its the stock keyboard developed for #LineageOS, I believe.

It's not quite as nice as #GBoard, but it's honestly quite nice.

They've made a lot of improvements to it in the past few years. They added emoji and motion gestures. For me, it only lacks emoji search and glide typing. Oh, and a deletion gesture. And per-character haptic feedback when using the motion gestures.

But it's like 80% there and fully #FOSS.
Quite nice.

While the #LineageOS keyboard has become truly great (currently using it on #CalyxOS), I've got a place in my heart for #Heliboard, which is probably the nicest #FOSS #Android keyboard I've ever used.

I just have one little nitpick.....

What is that logo? I get that it's trying to look like a keyboard, and somewhat spell "Heliboard," but it's failing its secondary objective pretty badly. 😂

Update: thanks to @nik, I now know that it represents a Helium atom! :D

I have a LineageOS phone without Google Play Services. My Facebook account is deactivated. But recently, on my phone, I did get the WhatsApp app via an anonymous connection on the Aurora Store, due to my former workplace requiring this (and also some friends use it).

It does seem to be running in the background, given that there are notifications from it. The app itself is unopened. So, I've just changed it to not allow notifications.

I'll try turning my phone off again and then back on to see if the app will be running upon reboot.

Okay, I turned it off, and left it off for about 15 minutes. Upon rebooting, the phone indicated that three apps were running (but not WhatsApp), and it said that WhatsApp was last running 17 minutes ago. So, it it currently does not seem to be running on its own.

I think the so-called "Google Play Integrity API" is (one of) googles move to circumvent the DMA (EU Digigal Markets Act). Google simply tries to make key app developers, eg banks, public app providers, payment services, force users to have google play installed, where the DMA requires them to provide freedom of choice of app store.

GPIA basically deems android devices without google play services unsafe, as in "rooted".

In Denmark, it is rapidly becoming impossible to use banking and payment apps, in fact any app providing payment using credit cards, on android devices without google play.

Contact your parliament and eu representative and make them aware!
And please share!

A friend of mine texted me about the Shein app (Shein being a clothing store). He suspects there's AI in the app that uses the phone's camera to detect who's checking it out. So, when his 11 year old daughter uses it, it sends her pictures of pricey stuff (IE, $33 T-shirts). When he uses it, it sends pictures of cute but cheap things.

Targeted advertising.

Now, I have neither the app nor even Google Play Store on my phone. I use LineageOS & F-Droid apps. But, I figured I'd check out the Shein web site on my Fennec browser...

Eek! They think I'm fat!

I guess my concern today is what happens when custom roms stop supporting the #pixel3a ?
It's an aging phone. People have put in a lot of work into roms for it (#LineageOS, #CalyxOS, #AXPOS), but from what I gather building Android ROMs is a huge mess, and needs lots of computing resources.
I'd like to think it will be possible to keep using it for years to come with #MainlineLinux, #postmarketOS or some similar project

It's a bit of a spectrum, but here's my understanding of it:

100% FOSS: only the Replicant project, which only fully supports 10+ year old phones
FOSS: #LineageOS, #GrapheneOS, and #CalyxOS. Likely contain proprietary drivers and blobs (low-level firmware and the like)
Mostly #FOSS: I believe /e/OS has some proprietary modules or bits of software
Less FOSS: I think Iodé is a fork of /e/OS that has more proprietary bits
Proprietary Android: Stock Android, Samsung's Android builds, etc. Only small portions of the underlaying OS are FOSS

#Poll: Hey #FOSS #Android (#CalyxOS, #GrapheneOS, #eOS, #LineageOS, whatever) folks, now that Android is demonstrably changing for the worse (in FOSS-hostile ways), what are you planning on doing?
