One of the brightest and fastest aurora displays I’ve ever seen. The sky lit up over Fairbanks in February 2015 — an intense pink band crawled across the sky, leaving green in its wake. The whole show lasted only a few minutes.

So to continue on my previous post talking about auroral mist, this is a prime example of a quality mist like view from my camera. While most of the aurora shots you see are very bright, visible to the naked eye, these type of images are the aftermath of such storms. The energy that was brought into the earths magnetic field is dispersed, and creates a much duller to the earthly observer aurora. But with the magic of a good camera and a proper lens, we are able to capture the hidden beauty of these mist like states.

This was shot on my back porch north of Fairbanks Alaska a few months ago after a very intense substorm.
Settings were 8” exposure, 2500iso, f1.8 20mm lens.

Hey there folks. I’m an aurora guide in Fairbanks and am new to this app. I’d like to share some photos from this past winter.

What we are looking at here is what’s known as a corona, or a breakup. This shot is looking straight up above me. These intense formations often last for only a minute or two but are absolutely beautiful to see. Huge amounts of energy is being converted to visual light, much like how a neon light works.
The different colors you see here are oxygen (green) and nitrogen (purple) as these solar particles crash into our atmosphere.

A jagged granite tor rises sharply from the rugged terrain of the Granite Tors Trail in Chena River State Recreation Area, near Fairbanks, Alaska. The rock formation, known as Asgard Tor, stands tall against a backdrop of open sky, surrounded by rolling hills and boreal forest.
