Is bothsidesism killing us? (And why scientific consensus matters) - Healthy Debate healthydebate.ca/2023/08/topic “While the issue of #falsebalance is usually linked to how journalists represent topics, false balance is increasingly driven by #socialmedia #echochambers, the fragmentation of the news media and the ideologically motivated embrace of fringe ideas. Too often this has allowed a small cohort of vocal contrarians to have an outsized impact on public policy and public perceptions.”

Healthy Debate · Is bothsidesism killing us? (And why scientific consensus matters) - Healthy DebateOur information ecosystem has become a massive false-balance machine. We need to correct bothsideism and misinformation.

Who should be guiding the Democrats over the next four years? Maya Contreras writes for @damemagazine about how it’s time to listen to experts in disinformation, historians and economists. “We must center the voices who’ve consistently shown up for the party, promote new leaders that have a proven track record of winning elections, and understand that the consultants who knew how to win elections in the 1990s don’t understand how elections are won in the current environment,” Contreras writes. “We’ll need a plan to counter the right-wing echo chamber with our own robust media. That won’t be easy or cheap.”

Dame Magazine - · Democrats’ Policies Help Americans. The Right Wing Echo-Chamber Drowned Them Out - Dame MagazineI’ve had a job since I was 14 years old. I’ve spent most of it working in the service industry. I have always been part of the working class here in America. The characteristics of the working class that apply to me are: food and beverage service, low to moderate income, and tipped hourly wages.

@thewritertype

In praise of bubbles. You are 90% serious, I imagine, and yes I agree with you 90%. (I would agree, of course, we are in the same bubble.)

Perhaps a bit of porosity in the membrane is what we need? No bursting the bubble, but some free exchange with other bubbles.

It's almost 2 years that we found ourselves washed up on these Fedi shores. Bubble or not, personally I am glad this is where I landed, and I'm delighted you're still here.

This platform is all about acting sanctimonious and the moment someone doesn't agree with your assertions, blocking that person.

"How dare someone push back against my idea?" is what its really about for a substantial portion of Mastodon users.

The discerning or anyone with anything between their ears will notice that I am neither antivax nor pro genocide, but because I am not onboard those cults I must endure these labels here anyways.

Mastodon 🐘Mary625 Ceasefire Now ☮️ (@Mary625@mstdn.social)@Pinaka@social.linux.pizza @blogdiva@mastodon.social Just read some of your posts. In addition to a being antivax, you're pro genocide. Not surprised. Blocked

@jwz
If only people who agree with everything you say on any topic are allowed to be in the thread, you CANNOT "curate" a following. Curating a following requires that people be able to have a variety of opinions expressed in a variety of conversations, among larger groups than merely their existing followers/following.

If the only "conversation" allowed is one that every little mini-Musk permits, then there is no longer any actual conversation. That's just another #EchoChamber.

Every conversation would become a monologue. Monologues do not allow for personal or account growth on anyone's part.

If you want to monologue, write in your blog. This is SOCIAL media.

"Tap on articles that interest you and Artifact will serve you similar posts and stories in the future, just as watching videos on TikTok’s For You page tunes its algorithm over time." - @caseynewton writing in #Platformer

As interesting as #Artifact seems, this approach seems like a perfect recipe for more focused #FilterBubbles driven by algorithms that prioritise engagement.

That's not a good thing.

We've been here before. Artifact's innovation seems to be that it uses #Transformers to more efficiently create those filter bubbles. They're still self-reinforcing #EchoChambers instead of something that broadens understanding and perspectives.
