We must hope that David Gibson in the NYT is correct in saying that this man's prayers for a "Trumpian" pope will go unanswered.

Even a conservative, let alone a Trumpoid, pope would be bad for the world. More clerico-fascism would be a horror.

Crisis Magazine · The Coming Trumpian PopeBy Austin Ruse - As we pray for the Holy Father in his final agony, we wonder who the next pope will be and pray he will be a Trumpian pope, a bull in the china shop who will “make a mess.”

He was soon struck by how closely San Diego’s fate was tied to #Mexico’s.

He had no idea that 90,000 people may cross the border on any given day for work or tourism or education, including around 1,000 Mexican children who attend schools in the #SanDiego diocese — and those numbers don’t even count asylum seekers.

#Immigration, the topic of a class at Harvard, was now part of his community’s lifeblood.

Pope Francis has shown some improvements but is “fragile,” a doctor treating him for chronic health issues says. “Is he out of danger? No,” Sergio Alfieri says. “But if the question is ‘is he in danger of death,’ the answer is ‘no,’” Read more from @NBCNews

Religion as a personal moral underpinning to life is perfect.

Religion in politics is always evil because ultimately it is about justifying political power though "the end justifies the means"

Secular ideologies can end up similarly; it is unavoidable with religion as it's all about life and death.

Politicians that insist on religious values almost always want these to apply to others, not to themselves.

Pope Francis said:

“Christian love is not a concentric expansion of interests that little by little extend to other persons and groups,” he wrote. “The true ordo amoris that must be promoted is that which we discover by meditating constantly on the parable of the ‘Good Samaritan’ . . . that is, by meditating on the love that builds a fraternity open to all, without exception.”

The rights and wrongs of politicians ‘doing #God

It’s always awkward when you’re feeling smug about having won a social media spat over the nature of Christian love, and then the literal Pope comes along and tells you you’re wrong

That was the fate of Donald #Trump’s number two last week — no, not Elon #Musk, but vice-president #JDVance. He converted from #Atheism to #Catholicism in 2019, choosing as his patron Saint Augustine who first wrote, in the fifth century AD, about the idea on which this distinctly 21st-century spat centered’

Hélder Pessoa Câmara OFS was born on 7 February 1909 in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. A self-identified socialist, he was the Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, serving from 1964 to 1985, during the military dictatorship. Câmara was an advocate of liberation theology. He preached for a church closer to the disfavoured people.

He said: "When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist."
