Yesterday or the day before, WTSA Radio News ran a story about a report of a burning car just off Rte 100. It seems to me the town was Warren but I am terrible at geography. When the police investigated, they found a body in the car. Authorities said it was not considered to be suspicious. They need to sharpen their suspicion skills.

I just went looking for the story at the WTSA site and it is not there in Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday reports. Was it removed? Since then, I easily found this online:

WARREN, Vt. (WCAX) - Vermont State Police are investigating after a body was found inside a burning car.

Police say a passerby reported the fire in a parking area on VT Route 100 in Warren at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and put out the blaze, and found a dead person in the driver’s seat.

State police say at this point the death is not suspicious. The body will be taken to the medical examiner’s office in Burlington for an autopsy while teams work to figure out the cause of the fire.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the state police in Berlin at 802-229-9191 or to leave an anonymous tip online.

Attached is a Web search hitlist entry regarding changes in the times of sunrise and sunset being slightly out of sync. According to the Boston Globe, sunset starts getting later about a week before the December solstice. We are about half a degree higher latitude than Boston. Doubtful it makes a big difference. Saturday-ish afternoons start getting longer.

Last evening, a feature on my computer said we were headed for a record low temperature (local record for this date, I imagine. It would not give the source of that information. Does anyone know whether the Brattleboro area actually did set a low temperature record early today? April 25, 2024

At one time way in the past but within living memory (as evidenced by the fact that I remember it), we set what was then a world record for the highest high atmospheric pressure ever recorded.

Weather Underground has a weather station on Orchard Street. So, local weather data at that site really is very local.

PS I just checked. Now my computer is saying TOMORROW morning may have a record low temperature. It still does not say the source of that information.

Kenneth N. Toney obituary, Brattleboro, VT

While I never had the good fortune to know Kenneth Toney, I can say that a person who has been around Brattleboro for a long time ought to recognize his face in the obituary's illustration. He was all over town. His sister, Theresa Toney, who I did know, walked at a slow pace. Nonetheless, she covered a lot of ground. She was a character who many people will remember.

When I first moved to Brattleboro, Toney's Market, where Gouger's Market and Deli now resides, was a going concern. It was much more than just a neighborhood convenience store. The Toney family was a big part of old Brattleboro.

RiP

The attached elderly photograph, which was originally posted by the Brattleboro Historical Society, shows Toney's Market in a state of transition that may have been before my time here. I arrived in 1970. Decades later, the man in this photo lived next door to me.

Totally by accident, leading up to today's noon news break, I came in on the end of the first episode of WTSA's new local music program, "Listen Local."

"Listen Local" features music by local acts and by other acts playing locally.  The show is hosted by Mitch Harrison of Next Chapter Records in Putney, Vermont. Local bands named under the "Episode One" heading are Whiskey Treaty Roadshow and Jake McKelvie and the Countertops. Non-local acts named are Colin Hay, Carsie Blanton, Ellis Paul, Lucy Kaplansky, and Amythyst Kiah.

WTSA has a mobile app. In fact, I haven't listened any other way in a very long time.

If the program has gotten a lot of fanfare so far, I am not aware of it. A search of Facebook's Southern Vermont Music Scene, for instance, turned up no references to it. Maybe this Mastodon post can help.

Since posting about the Brattleboro earth tremor, news has circulated of an earthquake centered at Tewksbury, New Jersey, at pretty much exactly the same time: - 10:23 a.m. It was rated as 4.8. Pretty far reaching quake, I should think.

About 10:20 or 10:25 a.m., Brattleboro had an earth tremor. Did you feel it?

Some of the things in my residence that easily creak started creaking. Then I noticed that I was shaking. My guess is that it lasted about fifteen or twenty seconds, though it seemed longer.
