50 jazz tracks for your streaming shuffle, no.6

John Coltrane. Blue Trane

This great long form Coltrane blues is a jazz classic that summarises where cutting edge jazz was in the late 1950s, stretching some of rules of the blues but not as yet really breaking them. Some great playing over a great groove, it also shows how a Blue Note records session often elevated players work to new heights. Its long but holds your attention.

🎷 A recent favorite of mine on many levels:
“July” from The Seasons (2018), Ben Wendel’s tone, the band, this live take at Blue Note Japan — a brilliant example of contemporary jazz that honors tradition without losing its steam.

Landslide is an album by American jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon featuring recordings from 1961 and 1962 which was first released on the Blue Note label in 1980 as part of the Blue Note Classics series.

The Allmusic review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine stated: "Landslide is comprised of previously unreleased material from three separate Dexter Gordon-led sessions between May 1961 and June 1962. ... All three sessions hold together fairly well, and although nothing on the record qualifies as a masterpiece, nothing is bad, either. In comparison to the released sessions, this material may pale somewhat, but it remains first-rate hard bop and is recommended to Gordon collectors". - Wikipedia

Lou Donaldson. Ode to Billy Joe

This little Blue Note gem comes from a sub-genre of popular song instrumentals that featured on many of their LPs during the 1960s. A great funky shuffle drives Donaldson's treatment which starts with just the vocal line & then slowly as the track progresses bends & stretches that into a funky bit of soul jazz. Some great other solos make for a glorious 60 minutes of groovy jazz

Geri Allen Trio - Twenty One

Another pickup from the recent Blue Note 50% off sale, this 1994 set finds Allen (piano) joined by Ron Carter (bass) and Tony Williams (drums), only available on Vinyl these days.

Go figure.

Anyway, if that particular combination of players doesn't excite you, see your doctor… or maybe just listen to these four great sides.

Walter Davis Jr. - Davis Cup

1958 session by Davis, and his only as a leader for Blue Note…which is hard to believe given the quality of the release. Davis didn’t lead another session until…1979.

He’s joined by Jackie McLean (Alto), Donald Byrd (trumpet), Art Taylor (drums), and Sam Jones (bass).

Hank Mobley - Third Season

Yet another one of those “recorded in 1967 but released years later” Blue Note albums, this strong set by Mobley, Lee Morgan (trumpet), Cedar Walton (piano), Billy Higgins (drums), Walter Booker (bass), Sonny Greenwich (guitar), and James Spaulding (alto) is well worth seeking out.

I’m not sure the last track works, but the rest is a very enjoyable, swinging hard bop set.

Juta Hipp - At the Hickory House (Volume 1)

I didn't know much Jutta Hipp when I purchased this, and it's a rather nice live set—her first for Blue Note—in a classic trio with Peter Ind on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums.

Hipp had a strangely short career...and undeservedly so, based on the evidence!

If you're a #JazzFan, you already "in love" with Blue Note Records & it will take a lot more lot more than 5 minutes to listen to all of the suggested tracks in this NYT article -- it'll take you over 8 mins to listen to the 1st -- but, take my word for it, it's worth the time.

#WayneShorter's #SpeakNoEvil; #LeeMorgan's #PartyTime; #ArtBlakey's #Pensativa; #BobbyHutherson's #Avis & #CliffordBrown's #EasyLiving are my favorite tracks among those mentioned.
