Remote and impressive: Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, which has been standing near mainland Britain's most westerly point since it was built in 1849 by Alan Stevenson, one of the Stevenson dynasty of lighthouse engineers. Alasdair Maclean’s NIGHT FALLS ON ARDNAMURCHAN (1984) was his only full-length prose work. Hilary Mantel called it
“…a book like an animated shipping forecast… You hear the ocean and the voice of a salt-laden gale in this sharp, thoughtful, eloquent memoir, which is specific yet not parochial, romantic, reflective, and yet grittily acquainted with the realities of life on the margin.”

Sea and sky. Earth-bound as I am
I’ve never yet been able to decide
which one I like best…

Whisky Advent Dram #3 - a dram for each day of advent.
Ardnamurchan Single Cask #233. 10 yo, NC, NCF, 53.4% abv.
Matured in a single Oloroso sherry cask, it arrives with wafts of dark fruit - dates, raisins and oaky woodiness which develop into sweet red fruit and sherbert. A lovely creamy, buttery mouthfeel with more red fruit - strawberries, cherries and cinnamon-spiced apple, perhaps a touch of liquorice. A long spicy finish, nippy on the lips and tongue, with a wee hit of bitterness at the end. A belter.
Remote Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, the most westerly village on the mainland. Until about 1900 it was accessible only by sea, and is now reached via a long single track road or by ferry from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. After a few days sailing north of the Skye Bridge visiting Raasay, Portree and Plockton it was back around Ardnamurchan. We will be heading south for Northern Ireland later this week. We are now tied up at Salen Jetty, a beautiful wee marina on Loch Sunart. There's a small shop here which regularly has Ardnamurchan bottles for sale. It's the only shop on the winding, narrow coastal road from the distillery (about nine miles away). I was looking for their Paul Launois 2023 or Sherry Cask Release, unfortunately for me, they aren't expecting these until the end of the week. But they did have a Maclean's Nose...
Maclean's Nose Blended Whisky (Adelphi), 46% abv, NCF, NC
Subtle notes of smoke with zesty citrus and sea-salt. Creamy, oily mouthful with hints of the burnt skin on a rice pudding. Slight floral hints, toffee and vanilla - there seems to be a bit of everything in this. At under £30 it's an absolute belter.
